Contest Entry;Daniel And The Wolves - A Childhood Story That Shaped My life
Growing up, I was always with my brothers, following them everywhere they go.We weren't really having friends in our neighborhood so we would always plan some games and play.I remember screaming one night after stepping on a broomstick in the dark and that was when I realized I had my mom's full attention anytime she's around. After finding out my Mom would always run to my aid no matter what,my brothers and I made it a habit to always raise false alarm at home.
This went on for years until oneday she got fed up and angry at us because she realized it had just become a habit and we do it for no reason. What made her more angry was she almost fell while in a rush to attend to us meanwhile it was one of our pranks.
That was a Friday night,I clearly remember.Friday nights in my house were for cartoons but that night was different. We were actually waiting for the scoldings of our lives, instead she told us a story to substitute the cartoons. This was a story I had heard so many times but I guess that was the day I really paid attention.
Daniel And The Wolves,she started.
There was a boy named Daniel, she used the male version of my name.Daniel was his parents' only child.
He had only one job;to send his father's flock of sheep to the field to graze in the morning and bring them back before before sunset.
Daniel was a good boy but he didn't have friends to play with.He was always bored whiles in the field.Though he tried making friends out of the flock but they wouldn't talk back or play games with him.
Oneday, after all his plans of doing something to cheer himself up failed,he devised dubious means of having fun.
Wolves!!! Wolves!!He cried
The villagers that heard him took to their heels to save the young boy from danger but upon arriving at the scene,he laughed his hearts out at them. His prank worked and for him, the looks on their faces were priceless.
Daniel was very happy. He just couldn't wait for the next day to pull another one.
Morning came and he changed the location, looked for another pasture and played the same prank.
Wolves!!Wolves!!
They came and found nothing.
He laughed at them as they return with so much anger and disappointment.
He went on for a while and almost everyone in the community knew this trick of his.
Another day came,he finished his duty but as the sun started setting he fell asleep. He woke up an hour at the blares of his flock.
To his uttermost surprise,a pack of wolves was devouring his flock mercilessly. As he stood to run,one started coming his way.
Wolves!!!!help!!!Wolves!!!
The farmers that were on their way home clearly heard him but nobody paid attention.
So Daniel really think we're that dumb because we're old?One of the farmers said.
Nobody minded him.
Daniel's parents got worried as their son didn't come home that day.
They looked for him the next day only to find his clothes in blood and the flock devoured.
After this story I got more scared and I asked her that so does it mean if a wolf is coming to catch us,she won't mind us?
She laughed and said no,no wolf will catch us but I shouldn't be pulling unnecessary pranks because the day I might really be in danger, everyone in the house would think I'm screaming for no reason as I always do.
That was a very good lesson I learnt that day which has followed me.
Even as I passed through my teen stage to my current age,the story gave me another lesson that; don't always ask people to satisfy your little needs, the day you might need greater help, nobody might come to your aid.
Lastly,if you keep on lying, nobody will believe you the day you decide to be truthful .
I'm very very grateful for @delakloe for this contest.
