TENSION HEADACHE- What it is and how to cope with it
Good day and welcome to another new week. Its a beautiful day for us to discuss an important topic: TENSION HEADACHE . Is there anything like Tension Headache? Lets see.
It feels like a band tied around your head...
Tension headache or tension type headache is that headache that is caused by the muscles in the head and neck tightening up and squeezing your skull, nerves and blood vessels. It comes with much pain.
It can be chronic ( if it lasts for 15 days in a month) or episodic ( if it lasts for less than 15 days in a month).
SYMPTOMS.
- It affects both sides of the head
- It is tightening in nature
- Neck pain
- Scalp becomes tender
- Stiffness of the back.
CAUSES OF TENSION HEADACHE
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Poor sleep
- Poor posture
DIAGNOSIS
A history of the headache will be needed. Some blood tests may be recommended for other possible causes or problems
TREATMENT/ PREVENTION/MANAGEMENT
- Take your medications. Some medications can be given for use when the headache comes ( Abortive medication) while some may be given for use daily to prevent it ( preventer medication).
- Do not stay for long time without food.
- Eat lots of fruits
- Drink water regularly
- Have a warm bath
- Exercise more
- Try alternative therapy such as having a massage
- Watch caffeine or alcohol intake
- Change your life style - This encompasses a lot: ~Have a routine for sleep ~Before sleeping try and unwind ~Have the right amount of sleep, do not under sleep or over sleep ~Do not stay close to TV or VDU screen. ~If you use computers, ensure that the monitor is at your eye level.
If headache persists, check your eyes. If you already have eye problem and are using glasses, have a regular check up.

TTH is the most common type of headache. Having some massage in the neck region might help as well.
