Shut Down and Restart ...

Hello, kind readers of @adsactly

In some previous texts, I have said that we live in a society in which doing nothing is frowned upon. The human being must be in everything: to know everything, to understand everything, to talk about everything. We are globalized beings and therefore omniscience is a fundamental requirement to carry on day to day. It does not occur to anyone to say that he has nothing to do. We feel obliged to say and to remain in constant work, movement, activity. Our era is that of the big shopping malls where you can do many things without having to leave it and in the least amount of time possible: you go shopping, to the cinema, you have a coffee, you have a business appointment, everything very well timed and noted in an agenda. Doing a thousand things in the least amount of time possible is our goal, our dream. Do not leave time for leisure.

And you will tell me, dear friend, you have to work to pay debts, to have what we need and want. Crassus error! This is a belief very well developed by industrialized societies and by education in our family. First of all I must say that working longer does not always mean that you will earn more money, and even that you are doing more. There are times when we can sit for hours and hours in front of a computer, for example, without doing anything worthwhile, simply because we are tired and ideas don't flow, we are mentally collapsed. What's more, you can be working, and in the speed race that you have with time, you can make more mistakes and therefore not advance almost anything. Likewise, a person who works in a market stall 20 hours a day may earn less than an advertising executive who works 4 hours. Sometimes more work doesn't make more profit; sometimes stopping, stopping, it's necessary.

When we talk about a break, we talk about resting, about suspending for a moment the deadly routine we wear. Not only for our physical well-being, but also for our mental and spiritual well-being. It is necessary to breathe, sit down, empty our minds, close our eyes, put a parenthesis to our daily obligations; surely in this way we will not only release the stress but we will be able to replenish the energies to be able to continue ahead in a more effective and healthy way. It is normal that we live wrapped in inertia, in a routine, and one way or another, feel that it is better. But this letting go and doing things in a mechanical way, can make us not think well the things we are doing, we can even do them wrong.

If we review the things that are in our environment, we will realize that many of them are downloaded or must be turned off to work better later: the television, the cell phone, the computer, the car, must be turned off for a certain time and sometimes require to be supplied with some kind of energy. It has always caught my attention how people have taken the habit, for example, of carrying cell phone chargers in their wallet, car, even in their hands, waiting for the slightest opportunity to plug in the mobile device and thus avoid being disconnected. It seems ironic that a society where disconnection to the Internet is a tragedy, a nightmare for anyone, is also a society that has disconnection with more important things, such as reality, family, the environment.

Given this reality, I came up with a brief story that I would like to share with you and that does not seem like something from a distant future or science fiction. I hope you know how to appreciate:

The man arrived haggard, pale and tired at the company's cafeteria. Lunchtime had passed and he only had ten minutes to have a coffee, so he had decided to invest that time to go down the cell phone, some very important documents for the company. He sat down and checked that he had a charger plug nearby, which was also unloaded. The red light on the white device gave him the signal he needed: it was charging. He immediately turned on the cell phone. A 5% battery was not enough, but he would try to do it as quickly as possible before returning to the office, he thought. The waitress came to his side and put a coffee on the table. There was the brown liquid, forgotten and cold, while the man navigated pages vertiginously. Its environment was no different: thousands of faces in a sea of luminous screens served as barriers or bubbles. The exhausted man massaged his neck, ran his fingers through his tired and cloudy eyes, felt a pressure on his head, a little tension in his chest. He does not realize but his body also has 5% battery, 4 ... 3 ... 2 ... little by little his heart is going out ...

When we need rest, the body sends us signals in one way or another. We cannot let these signals pass, ignore them, because just like any artifact, object or machine, we will surely begin to fail and we will not be in the best conditions. That of doing things "until the body endures" can be useful at some times, but not always. I know thousands of people who live sleepwalking, withered, with a sore back, for pressing not only the body but also the mind. The idea is that we can disconnect from work, relax to "reset", rest a little, and then restart. We have to internalize that resting does not make us lazy, but in human beings. And if it helps us, remember that Isaac Newton discovered gravity by enjoying a nap.

I completely agree with you, @nancybriti. An old song said: "Sweet is doing nothing". Leisure isn't necessarily stultifying, as some say. Reading (for pleasure), watching a good film, walking, sharing with a partner, family and/or friends, practicing meditation and contemplation... are practices that nourish us spiritually and bodily, and, therefore, necessary. Unfortunately, in my country (Venezuela) some of these activities have become difficult to carry out as we wish and we are often impelled to respond to the weight of obligations.
Thank you for your good post.

That's right. It's true. Unfortunately, in Venezuela we can't afford to take a break. We have to look for money in order to feed ourselves and survive. However, we must make the attempt to unplug ourselves, for our peace and mental health. Greetings

Great reflection.

It seems ironic that a society where disconnection to the Internet is a tragedy, a nightmare for anyone, is also a society that has disconnection with more important things, such as reality, family, the environment.

It seems to be trendy now, ironically after so many struggles to reach legislation to regulate working hours, that most companies subject their workers to 12 or more hours of work to barely reach minimum wage. We hear the stories of our friends and relatives who have left the country and are working in other latitudes, and the question remains: what do we do with the human being? how do we demand quality and efficiency from a mind that is exhausted?
Doctors are forced to work 48 or more hours straight and we don't want them to make mistakes. Because of work stress beople have emotional problems with family and friends, which in turn affect their work life, but we expect them to be robots and perform flawlessly regardless.
It's a bizarre world we live in

It looks like science fiction, but it's not! We work to live, but we kill ourselves working. Meaningless! Man has forgotten that he is flesh and blood, and so there are those who believe themselves to be iron and infallible and in the end the body inevitably takes its toll. Always with accurate and interesting comments, @hlezama. Thank you. ;)

Wow, It looks great.

Reading your post raised a new question in my mind. If we had any options to restart. So it would have been a lot better. We could totally control our lives. We can give a raster only when our lives get tired of moving on. As a result, a new life could be resumed.

Thanks for giving us such a beautiful post.

hey SS, you are full off

It would be interesting if we could erase and restart our life! Although surely there would be kept some passages, traces, of the past that could never be erased. Perhaps the human being could not start from scratch. Thank you for your interesting comment, @saifulshahid
