Dino Crisis 2 Awesome Use Of Sound

in #retrogaming6 years ago

One of the games I played back on PS1 was Dino Crisis 2. It's a survival game where you got stuck age of Dinosaurs. The story is a bit complex and hard to explain (but is good nevertheless.) The gameplay of this game however is very good.

Like Resident Evil games of that time. Dino Crisis has 3D characters on pre-rendered backgrounds with fixed camera angles.

But what's amazing about this game is its sound. I'm not talking about music (which is also good) but the sound effects. The game uses the fixed camera to hide some dinosaurs from the view. While that might increase their difficulty, this is offset by the sounds the dinosaurs make.

The sound of their movements, their footsteps and their voices are indicators of how far they are from you, and what move they might attack you with.

For a PS1 game I was always amazed by how the sounds make help the player in this game. Dino Crisis 2 is one of the games that uses sounds effects right in late 90s.

I can't play this game without its sound being clear.

I haven’t played it, but I totally believe you. I would always turn off the “music” and crank the ambient to hear/play better. I thought it was strange when sneaking games had loud music by defaulted. COD too.
Play Tenchu with music off too. 😁

Yeah sometimes music covers sound effects but that doesn't happen in Dino Crisis too. Tenchu is one of the recommended games for PS1-era that I haven't played.

Dino Crisis sounds much more interesting to me now. @ahmadmanga, I think Dino Crisis eventually became the Turok franchise didn't it?
Tenchu is my favorite game. It's the only reason... well Driver is good too, but... oh a Twisted Metal... Tenchu, it's the main reason I keep my PS1 around. I hope you get a chance to play it. :)

While I can't say I approved of the change from survival horror to action shooter, Dino Crisis 2 has one of the best opening FMV sequences of any PS1-era game ever made. That thing is a masterpiece of squeezing every ounce of power from a console, and I'll occasionally toss it (or even original Dino Crisis) into the system just to watch the opening movie play.

I also agree with your assessment of the sound. Both the original and the sequel have some superb sound design, where despite being in stereo only, the effects manage to have depth. The T-Rex will blow you away if you're playing the game with headphones on. :)

I totally agree, I think the opening movie deserves a post about it too!
