Oral health is an important aspect in our daily life, which many times we neglect.Good oral health is essential not only for a beautiful smile but also for overall well being.World Oral Health Day is observed every year on March 20 to raise global awareness about this issue.The main objective this day make people aware about oral care dental health and prevention of oral diseases.

History of World Oral Health Day

World Oral Health Day was launched the first time in 2007 by the International Dental Federation FDI World Dental Federation.But since 2013 it being celebrated worldwide on March 20 every year.The main objective observing day make people aware about oral health and encourage them develop good habits of taking care of their teeth and gums.

Why is oral health important?

Poor oral health not only affects teeth and gums but affectsentire body. Poor oral health can increase the risk several serious diseases, such as.Gum disease Periodontitis It can cause bleeding, pain and tooth decay.

Tooth decay Cavities Bacterial infection in the tooth can lead to tooth decay.Halitosis This can affect a person self Diabetes Poor oral health can make controlling diabetes difficult.

Ways to maintain good oral health

To maintain good oral health we need develop some simple habits which will help keep our teeth and gums healthy for long time.

  1. Brush teeth regularly
    It is important to brush your teeth at least twice day morning and night.It better to use fluoride toothpaste as it prevents tooth decay.Brushing should take at least two minutes.

  1. Cleaning the food that has accumulated between the teeth.Brushing alone doesnt always remove food from between teeth so dental floss or mouthwash should be used.
    When food accumulates between teeth bacteria can grow and cause tooth decay and gum problems.
  1. Eat healthy food

It is best to avoid high sugar and sweet foods, as these can increase tooth decay.

Consuming foods rich in calcium like milk, curd, cheese etc. strengthens the teeth.

Eating foods high in fiber (such as fruits and vegetables) helps control the level of bacteria in the mouth.

  1. Stay away from smoking and tobacco products

Smoking and tobacco products not only discolor the teeth, but also increase the risk of oral cancer many times. So they should be avoided to stay healthy.

  1. See the dentist regularly

Many times we don't notice any problem in our teeth but it can gradually become big. Therefore, a dentist should be seen once in six months, so that any problem can be detected early and preventive measures can be taken.

On the occasion of World Oral Health Day, various institutions, schools and health organizations undertake various programmes, such as:
