Michotamia aurata sp. (Robber Fly) in Sumatra
The Asilidae are the robber fly family in the order Diptera. The common name of robber flies refers to their propensity as assassin flies. The family Asilidae are cosmopolitan with an estimated over 7000 described species.
This is the Michotamia aurata, a species of robber fly belonging to the family Asilidae. M. aurata is slightly larger than the robber flies in the genus Ommatius.
It has large, bulging eyes in metallic green, and a stout proboscis enclosing a sharp, sucking hypopharynx. The thorax is gray and muscular, has light brown abdomen that is long like dragonflies and has orange legs. It is a very aggressive predator and is able to ambush prey while in flight. Grasshoppers, wasps, bees, and some species of flies often fall prey to the robber fly.
