Most of my photos suck

Being your own worst critic is of the utmost importance if you won't to grow as a photographer and create something meaningful. Often I try to step back and look at my photographs with fresh eyes or when certain time passes. I have to admit that, while most of them are "good enough" only a certain few can be considered timeless or to be in a magnum opus.

Famous photographs throughout the history had the same objective criticism towards their own work, usually saying that a crop of 2-12 great photographs per year should be considered as success. While making mediocre photographs is important part of the process, it's those rare gems that make all the difference.

How do you create more meaningful photographs?

  • Practice makes perfect so do it as much as possible, especially if you are new to photography. As Cartier-Bresson said "your first 10000 photographs are your worst".
  • Kill the ego that doesn't like to be criticized, don't be afraid to share your work thinking it might not be well received
  • Learn from the masters and other photographers, add new tools and techniques to your repertoire. It will make you able to tell the story in various ways
  • Print your work. Looking at it on the large piece of paper is completely different experience from the computer or phone, you'll see many details that are otherwise unnoticed. It's a great leaning experience and it's also very satisfactory. :)

Anyway, these photos are from yesterday's walk, taken with Fuji X100F.

I find you to be one of the best street photographers I follow, your timing is incredible! So many of the moments are so fleeting that I know you have to be really fast to recognise a moment and then capture it.

I saw that first photo on your instagram and I was like WOW 😱

Thanks very much, Eve! It means a lot coming from the best in her business. :) That first photo was a motivation for the rant, sometimes everything lines up together to make more than just a usual photograph. It happened that I was in the right place at the right time, a minute later the same shot couldn't be repeated.

Haha, the horribly wonderful life an artist, once you struck gold, everything else before that feels like shit, and then you are always chasing that next golden shot 😅

Haha so true. :D

That's absolutely true, practice does make you perfect. I still need to get 9500 photos to be perfect though :p

Haha no hurry, enjoy the process. :)

Beautiful work as per usual. Makes me want to take some time in the city - pity it's 3 hours away :(

Thanks, Mark! Well try it out next time you are in town. I sometimes wish to escape to the mountains for a change lol.
