Cities in the South Independence, Missouri

?Whether you're young or (ahem) young-at-heart, everyone will enjoy visiting Independence, Mo. You see, Independence is one of those special destinations that appeals to basically everyone's interest.

How so, you may ask?

Perhaps Stephanie Rousch, tourism director, says it the best. She describes the city as "an American original, presenting fascinating stories of the pioneers and westward trails, Mormon heritage, border and Civil wars, famous outlaws, a still vibrant historic square and Truman lore. Visitors will also find contemporary amenities with a variety of shopping and entertainment venues, and numerous lodging choices."

Located east of Kansas City and is the fourth largest city in the state, there's no doubt about Independence's strong role in history. You probably all ready know the city was President Harry Truman's home, but also what's fascinating is that Independence is known as the "Queen City of Trails." You see, the three main trails (Santa Fe, Oregon and California) that guided pioneers west began in or around the city.

And that's just the beginning of what you can discover when visiting Independence.

If you're ready to spend a day (or longer) here, there are definitely some places that should be on top of your itinerary.

Maybe you're interested in seeing more history (how could you not be in Independence), so be sure to visit the 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home and Museum, where Frank James once stayed. There's the Bingham-Waggoner Estate, located on the Santa Fe Trail. The Vaile Mansion shouldn't be missed, and just take one look and you'll see why.

Everyone needs to shop and Independence doesn't disappoint in this area either. If you plan it right, you can hit all of the main shopping areas in a day. However, if you only have time for one, be sure it's shopping along Historic Independence Square.

Explore the great outdoors at one of the city's many trails. There's also ample parks and greenspaces to choose from as well.

With much more to see and do, the city should be definitely on your must-visit list. You won't be disappointed spending a weekend in Independence.
