Gone with the Wind - Movie Review
This film is one of the classic films that became the benchmark of American cinema, a hollywood favorite epic whose title is most often found in any top list in various movie sites, magazines around the world.
Gone with the Wind, is a great example of collaboration involving hundreds of workers who are able to produce something quite extraordinary.
Dozens of replayed scriptwriters and scriptwriters, the star-studded process of star selection so time-consuming and costly, the conflict of chair-chair movements to the big-time studio games of the era were faced by producer David O'Selznick, who reportedly commissioned this film project by hand iron.
It was lifted from a 1936 novel by Margaret Mitchell. Next year, Mitchell won the Pulitzer from the only novel he ever wrote and three years after the release of the novel, 1939, the film was released and created history. Selznick bought the rights to film his novel for $ 50,000 at the encouragement of his friends. The big studio of the time was sort of, MGM and RKO ironically not at all interested in making GWTW.
Victor Fleming was appointed director to replace George Cukor, who reportedly fired Selznick for personal conflict. The year 1939 was a golden peak for Flemming's career. Another film released in the same year, The Wizard of Oz also became a separate phenomenon in the history of American cinema.
In the ranks of the main player, Clark Gable who was a golden boy filled the role of Rhett Butler. Selznick's process of getting Clark Gable from the hands of MGM (the studio that accepts the actor) is not easy, too many tough negotiations are made by Selznick to the MGM officials. For Scarlett O'Harra's own role, Selznick intervened directly audition thousands of female actresses randomly until finally cut her into two between Paulette Goddard and Vivian Leigh.
This film is more about conflict (and love) between the four central characters, Rhett Buttler (Clark Gable), Scarlett O'Hara (Viven Leigh), Melanie Hamilton (Olivia DeHaviiland), Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard), with Tara, Atlanta and south of the period before and after the civil war that raged in the United States between the years 1861-1865.
Scarlett is the figure of a beautiful woman who is described as spoiled, selfish, cynical and somewhat wild. Scarlett could have gotten any man at the time, but she preferred to pursue (and rather embarrass herself) Ashley Wilkes, who was then a fiancee of her cousin, Melanie Hamilton. Well, in the midst of a love triangle conflict that came a man who was driven from his hometown and is a war veteran, Rhett Butler. hehe .. who had watched GWTW must have memorized it with Rhett Butler's deadly smile addressed to Scarlett first from the bottom of the stairs, as if her smile could tear Scarlett's clothes.
If noted, Scarlett and Rhett actually almost have the same properties. Scarlett was not a good-hearted innocent woman, but more like playing with men's hearts and cheating on their sexual desires with her beauty (including the hearts of the men in pairs). Rhett himself was famous for arrogant, arrogant, egotistical, brash and ignorant, and also a millionaire and female conqueror. Rhett's charisma and charms facing Scarlett's passion and beauty make them highly deserving of each other, they are equally appealing to the opposite sex.
In addition to 2 of the 4 central characters in the film, Ashley Wilkes, who was originally pursued by Scarlett, is also not really a perfect Man, he is not a prince charming wise and certainly he is still a man who is described still wanting an affair but still not sure and loyalty against his wife and cousin, Melanie is still too strong for her to be wasted. Melanie, on the other hand, is the opposite of Scarlett, she is portrayed as a vulnerable, weak, innocent, stupid girl and looks good (even if she is really good), maybe her innocence and her plinish stance make her look stupid.
Ashley may have initially fallen in love with Melanie for this, and the reverse is also true of many men who are fascinated by the passion and beauty of Scarlett, well .., perhaps except Rhett who often utters stabbing words and offends Scarlett. In Rhett's eyes, Scarlett was a very attractive woman to date, but not to marry.
Rampant civil war in the American seantereo, the defeat happened to Tara, Atlanta, Tara only peaceful for a while. The once fertile land is now red-hot and barren, and needs to be done from scratch to make it a fertile back that is the livelihood of most of Tara's inhabitants. Tara is never the same again.
In the midst of the difficult conditions, Marrying Scarlett and Rhett Butler, is not a coveted thing for anyone, and certainly did not solve any problems that befall them. Rhett with his selfish personality only wanted Scarlett's offspring and pleasure, as did Scarlett who was only interested in Rhett's money and wealth.
Scarlett showed a big change in her from the beginning of the movie, mid, to late. Who initially hated war like other women, circumstances forced him to be tough to accept the reality of life and willing to work rough. Yes certainly not a sentimental reason, he just did not want to live poor again.
The film won 8 of the 13 oscar nominations at the time, including Best Picture 1939. David O'Selznick's hard work for this film pays off successfully with this film's triumph both in quality and commercially. The realistic story contributes to the film in i. This is not a fantasy fairy tale of love. The ranks of actors and actresses in this film who look very honest in her acting, Chemistry between Rhett and Scarlett (who should be the main selling in a romantic movie), is also not the strongest Chemistry on screen ever. To avoid such misunderstandings, we need to know, this movie is not a romantic comedy completely, this movie is far above leaving a simple genre like a romantic comedy.
This epic story is too simple if it is explained through a brief review. The duration of the movie as much as 238 minutes (nearly 4 hours! !!) is lifted from this 1.037 page thick novel even if discussed in detail will take days. The complexity of stories and characters, the civil war background that raged at that time, not to mention the change to the 4 central characters throughout the film and surrounding circumstances are described in detail, solid and meaningful. Different I see it with movie movies now that many take the duration with lots of empty scenes berbompong. One of my passion for the classic movie is the way it is so detailed and dense story telling with the duration that is not too long, but after finished watching it, I got a great satisfaction from all sides.
Over the coming year, this film will always be one example of the greatness of American cinema and the real creation of a masterpiece from the hands of hundreds of workers in an era where technological limitations never become an obstacle to creating a great work of art. As time goes on, everything Gone with the wind, all right - gone, but never forgotten.
