Los Antiguos (parte 25, Reporte Final)

Fueron setecientos veintidós días, desde que Saul había corrido por los pasillos del rectorado, para alcanzar al rector y pedirle que lo pusiera en el equipo que sería enviado por la academia a la estación BN34, justo la frontera de los dominios humanos en el Brazo de Orión, en las puertas de las poco exploradas regiones del Brazo de Norma.

Setecientos veintidós días, de que se comprometiera de dictar varios cursos y programar otros tantos seminarios, a partir de la investigación que realizara, hoy pensaba que no serían muy extensos esos seminarios, con pocas horas bastaría para explicar lo que habían aprendido de los antiguos, probablemente su ahora buena amiga Faith, si tendría mucho de que hablar y más aún los astrofísicos, ingenieros y otros especialistas, que había formado los diferentes equipos.

Como hablar de una cultura, cuando, a todas vistas, no existe una, como explicar en términos arqueológicos, lo que más que como una sociedad, se comporta como una máquina, decidida a preservar su existencia.

Hoy era su último día en la estación del Planeta Antiguo, como, poco imaginativamente, habían decidido bautizarlo. Hoy acababa la primera misión de exploración, otros vendrían después de ellos, un nuevo equipo llegaría dentro de doscientos días, pero fueron ellos quienes iniciaron esta misión, fueron ellos quienes crearon las teorías que sentarían la base de las próximas investigaciones y descubrimientos.

Los antiguos estuvieron en esta galaxia, mucho antes que cualquier otra especie conocida, aun antes de que la vida iniciara en muchos de los mundos explorados, incluyendo la Tierra misma. Su existencia y legado se habían perdido en el tiempo hasta ahora. La nueva misión de investigadores tendría la difícil tarea de revivir ¿cómo fue su forma de vida?, y de entender como pensaban, dada su incapacidad de comunicarse con otros.

Saul abordó la Arquímedes, la misma nave que los había traído, sería la encargada de transportarlos de regreso, sólo su tripulación había cambiado, el capitán Anderson y sus subalternos habían sido enviados de vuelta a la búsqueda de la Andrómeda, la flota desaparecida, a la cual desde hace ya más de trescientos años se le trataba de encontrar, mientras se abrían nuevas rutas y descubrían nuevos mundos, en el brazo de norma y del escudo-centauro.

El equipo de científicos dejó la estación del Planeta Antiguo, rumbo a la BN34, donde darían su reporte final, el resumen de su trabajo y los resultados de su investigación, un simple formalismo, pues ya sus conclusiones eran públicas, casi treinta publicaciones había sido hechas al respecto, en diferentes campos: astrofísica, ingeniería, biología, bioquímica, criptografía, psicología, sociología y por supuesto arqueología.

Un grupo de expertos de diferentes lugares se había reunido en la BN34 para escuchar el reporte que darían Saul Smith, Faith Ibraimovich, Vladimir Tsunekawa, Elias Vicentelli y Vincent Pérez. La misión que reunió a varios de los mejores expertos en sus respectivos campos y había llevado a algunos de ellos a las regiones, alcanzadas por los humanos, más distantes y poco conocidas de la galaxia, había culminado y hoy, después de un viaje de retorno, de poco más de cuarenta días, se podría escuchar, de sus participantes, los resultados.

El informe explicó el origen no natural de la estrella negra, durante el intento de los antiguos por evitar el colapso de su estrella. El uso de los módulos multifuncionales como base de su evolución biotecnológica y de toda su tecnología. El uso de cristales de silicio e iridio como medios de almacenamiento holográfico para sus funciones sensoriales y de la existencia de un estrato completo del subsuelo, formado por estos cristales, que representaba un descomunal repositorio de memoria, el cual estaba enlazado con la superficie del planeta, a través de estructuras construidas en cráteres, situados en el fondo oceánico.

La principal y más controvertida teoría emanada de la expedición, fue explicada por Faith y Saul, las sondas no eran individuos de una sociedad, su comportamiento aparentemente parecido al de un enjambre, en realidad respondía a la necesidad de un organismo mayor de proporcionarse medio motores, que le permitieran intervenir en su entorno, para preservar su existencia, un organismo que se había evolucionado a partir del desarrollo, durante millones de años, de una enorme red neural, que, tras la creación de los cubos multi funcionales, había logrado proporcionarse un medio de almacenamiento masivo, que sirviera de repositorio de la descomunal cantidad de información que era capaz de adquirir del entorno.

Lo especie, que fue llamada Antiguos, no se trataba de una sociedad de individuos, las sondas no eran individuos, ni las extrañas células, similares a neuronas eran los individuos. Siempre se trató de un solo individuo, todos ellos formaban una única forma de vida que abarcaba toda la superficie y subsuelo del planeta, una gigantesca red celular, que llenaba todo el planeta. Una red de células nerviosas que formaban una única conciencia, que en algún momento de la evolución de aquel planeta, había despertado y visto la necesidad de empezar a manipular su entorno, para proporcionarse medios motores que le ayudaran preservar su propia existencia, más allá de la simple necesidad de alimentarse de las moléculas que flotaban en su océano.

Así comenzó la carrera de los o El Antiguo por sobrevivir, por evitar la destrucción de su estrella, pues era la única forma de mantenerse con vida, porque no le era posible emigrar a otro mundo, pues ellos o él eran el planeta mismo, eran la completa simbiosis entre los organismos y el medio en que habitaban, una absoluta integración entre ambos.

Cuando el intento de salvarse falló y el colapso de la estrella no pudo ser evitado, su muerte generó un inmenso estallido de rayos gamma, que acabó por desintegrar casi todas las células que conformaban al antiguo, y la inmensa explosión barrió con la atmósfera, rica en nitrógeno, de la cual llovían las moléculas que servían de alimento a sus océanos y superficie.

El estallido generó la expulsión de la materia estelar, quedando un planeta desnudo que sobrevivió a ser desintegrado, gracias a la esfera que había tratado impedir el colapso, un planeta casi estéril, donde escasos organismos sobrevivieron en las profundidades del océano y en el subsuelo, donde aun se mantuvo vivo el antiguo conservando sus memorias, con la escasa vida que le quedaba, vida que se acabó de extinguir cuando, en ausencia de una estrella que lo calentara, el planeta mismo, se convirtió en una gigantesca bola congelada.

Para colmo, el evento fue tan catastrófico que las emisiones de rallos gamma alcanzaron distancias superiores a los cien años luz, esterilizando toda una región de la galaxia matando a todas las sondas que aun podía estar alejadas de su mundo, tal vez aun haya algunas de ellas vagando sin rumbo por el espacio, como la primera que fue encontrada, la cual debió haberse estrellado allí, varios miles de millones de años después de la catástrofe.

Tras concluir su reporte, días después, los grupos de expertos partirían a sus respectivos mundos, dejando en manos de otros continuar con el trabajo, aun el enigma del Antiguo no había sido develado por completo y tal vez, varios miles de millones de años, se interponían para lograrlo.

The Ancients (part 25, Final Report)

It was seven hundred and twenty-two days, since Saul had run through the corridors of the rectory, to reach the rector and ask him to put him on the team that would be sent by the academy to station BN34, just the border of the human domains in the Orion Arm, at the gates of the little explored regions of the Norma Arm.

Seven hundred and twenty-two days after he committed himself to give several courses and schedule as many seminars, based on the research he did, today he thought that those seminars would not be very extensive, with a few hours enough to explain what they had learned from the ancients, probably his now good friend Faith, if he had much to talk about and even more so the astrophysicists, engineers and other specialists, who had formed the different teams.

How to talk about a culture, when, by all accounts, there is not one, how to explain in archaeological terms, what more than a society, behaves like a machine, determined to preserve its existence.

Today was his last day at the station of the Ancient Planet, as, little imaginatively, they had decided to name it. Today the first exploration mission was over, others would come after them, a new team would arrive in two hundred days, but it was they who started this mission, it was they who created the theories that would lay the foundation for the next investigations and discoveries.

The ancients were in this galaxy long before any other known species, even before life began on many of the explored worlds, including Earth itself. Their existence and legacy had been lost to time until now. The new mission of researchers would have the difficult task of reviving their way of life and understanding how they thought, given their inability to communicate with others.

Saul boarded the Archimedes, the same ship that had brought them, would be in charge of transporting them back, only its crew had changed, Captain Anderson and his subordinates had been sent back in search of the Andromeda, the missing fleet, which for more than three hundred years they had been trying to find, while new routes were opened and new worlds were discovered, in the arm of the norm and the centaur shield.

The team of scientists left the Ancient Planet station, heading for BN34, where they would give their final report, the summary of their work and the results of their research, a simple formalism, since their conclusions were already public, almost thirty publications had been made on the subject, in different fields: astrophysics, engineering, biology, biochemistry, cryptography, psychology, sociology and of course archaeology.

A group of experts from different places had met at BN34 to listen to the report that would be given by Saul Smith, Faith Ibraimovich, Vladimir Tsunekawa, Elias Vicentelli and Vincent Perez. The mission that brought together several of the best experts in their respective fields and had taken some of them to the most distant and little-known regions of the galaxy, reached by humans, had culminated and today, after a return journey of a little more than forty days, one could hear the results from its participants.

The report explained the unnatural origin of the black star, during the attempt of the ancients to avoid the collapse of their star. The use of the multifunctional modules as the basis of its biotechnological evolution and all its technology. The use of silicon and iridium crystals as holographic storage media for their sensory functions and the existence of a complete sub-surface layer, formed by these crystals, which represented a huge memory repository, which was linked to the surface of the planet, through structures built in craters, located on the ocean floor.

The main and most controversial theory emanating from the expedition, was explained by Faith and Saul, the probes were not individuals from a society, their behavior apparently similar to that of a swarm, in reality responded to the need of a larger organism to provide itself with a motor means, which would allow it to intervene in its environment, to preserve its existence, an organism that had evolved from the development, over millions of years, of an enormous neural network, which, after the creation of the multi-functional cubes, had managed to provide itself with a massive storage medium, which served as a repository for the enormous amount of information it was capable of acquiring from the environment.

The species, which was called Ancient, was not a society of individuals, the probes were not individuals, nor were the strange, neuron-like cells individuals. It was always a single individual, all of them formed a single form of life that encompassed the entire surface and subsoil of the planet, a gigantic cellular network, which filled the entire planet. A network of nerve cells that formed a single consciousness, which at some point in the evolution of that planet, had awakened and seen the need to start manipulating its environment, to provide itself with motor means to help preserve its own existence, beyond the simple need to feed on the molecules floating in its ocean.

Thus began the race of the Ancient Ones to survive, to avoid the destruction of their star, because it was the only way to stay alive, because it was not possible for them to migrate to another world, because they or he were the planet itself, they were the complete symbiosis between the organisms and the environment in which they lived, an absolute integration between both.

When the attempt to save himself failed and the collapse of the star could not be avoided, his death generated an immense gamma ray burst, which ended up disintegrating almost all the cells that made up the old one, and the immense explosion swept away the atmosphere, rich in nitrogen, from which the molecules that served as food for its oceans and surface rained down.

The explosion generated the expulsion of the stellar matter, leaving a naked planet that survived to be disintegrated, thanks to the sphere that had tried to prevent the collapse, an almost sterile planet, where few organisms survived in the depths of the ocean and in the subsoil, where the ancient one was still alive preserving its memories, with the little life that it had left, life that was just extinguished when, in the absence of a star that heated it, the planet itself, became a giant frozen ball.

To make matters worse, the event was so catastrophic that the gamma ray emissions reached distances of more than one hundred light years, sterilizing an entire region of the galaxy killing all the probes that could still be far away from its world, perhaps even there some of them wandering aimlessly through space, like the first one that was found, which must have crashed there, several billion years after the catastrophe.

After concluding their report, days later, the groups of experts would leave for their respective worlds, leaving it in the hands of others to continue with the work, even the enigma of the Ancient One had not been completely unveiled and perhaps, several billions of years, were standing in the way.
