Established in 1966, the Neon Museum is considered as the major milestone of the North Las Vegas, Nevada as it takes pride in amassing, conserving and presenting through interactive exhibits the rich cultural, educational artistic and historical aspects of the valley. Furthermore, the museum is a non-profit 503 c organization that is exempted from any sort of taxpayer to the federal government.
The museum covers the area of 2.5 acres which also includes the vast open-air exhibit space with the name of Neon Boneyard. In the museum, there are around 200 signs that depict the cultural, historical, artistic and educational uniqueness of the Las Vegas valley. Out of them, only 11 are reestablished. Along with these refurbished signs, the Neon Museum also houses a visitor center residing within the existing La Concha Motel Lobby and the North Galley that showcases the light projection.
Within the Neon Museum’s permanent collection, there are altogether nine signs that have been reinstated till the present day. These restored signs have been installed throughout the city and can be viewed on a regular basis all the seven days a week and 24 hours in a day. Since its establishment that is from 119 onwards to present, the museum authorities have dedicated and geared its efforts in amassing original sign transcriptions and blueprints. Furthermore, they have also invested a considerable amount of time and money in collecting all the records in the form of images, oral histories, and photographs and used them to enhance the museum’s library and archives. In addition to working towards improving sits record collections and archives, the museum is also working towards collecting those signs that are associated with ephemera. They include ashtrays, casino chips, postcards, and matchbooks.
Through the exhibition of the museum’s unique collection, the museum management team and authority welcomes the community of Nevada to experience and sightsee the cultural history and creativity of the Las Vegas Valley. Therefore, the museum arranges interactive education and learning programs to articulate the cultural enrichment and artistry of the valley through a variety of mediums. These mediums can be in the form of guided tours headed by trained and knowledgeable docents, creative workshops, outreach programs, lectures, group discussions on engaging topics, school educational programs, educational resources and a lot more. For both the professional students and the wider community, the museum’s research library and its restored archives open its door. However, in order to get insight into Las Vegas history and cultural, artistic and educational prominence through the research and archives library keep one thing in mind that the availability of reading resources are still limited and the admission to the library is through appointments.
