Practical Guide: From Soil to Harvest
1. Soil Preparation:
- Testing the Soil: Check the soil quality. You can actually use a soil test kit to check the pH and nutrient of the soil.
- Clearing the Field: Clear the field and eradicate all forms of vegetation such as; weeds, rocks and aged plants.
- Tilling: Till the ground in order to make it crumbly. This helps roots grow better.
2. Fertilization:
- Adding Nutrients: Depending on the results obtained from the soil test, take appropriate fertilizers. In terms of organic matter, compost or manure is ideal in terms of improving the ground in which crops must grow.
- **Mixing:Details: it’s recommended to add fertilizers to the soil before planting so that the plants get nutrients.
3. Planting:
- Choosing Seeds: When choosing healthy seeds suitable to the area, make the right decision.
- Spacing: Plant seeds at the right intervals so as to prevent them from overcrowding.
- Timing: Plant at the right season for the plant to produce the crop is required.
4. Irrigation:
- Watering: Keep the soil moist. The use of drip or sprinkler systems is recommended to help customers save water.
- Monitoring: Follow the moisture level frequently. The other precaution is to minimize watering so that water does not penetrate the roots compartment.
5. Pest Management:
- Observation: Look constantly for pests or diseases in plants.
- Control Methods: Apply non-toxic pesticides or home-made remedies for crops protection.
6. Harvesting:
- Timing: Use the plant’s maturity for full, complete reap when and only when the crop is fully ripe.
- Technique: Do not cut crops roughly and use sharp knives or any other sharp edged tool while cutting. Avoid damaging the plants.
7. Selling in the Market:
- Packaging: Properly pack your produce and place them appropriately to avoid early spoilage and to create an appealing sight.
- Pricing: Get information on current market prices in other to arrive at the right price for the crops.
- Finding Buyers: Try to approach farmers’ markets or go through retailers, dining establishments, and vendors who need to purchase produce.
- Marketing: Advertise the crops through social media, through a post or a local advertisement to gain customers.
That way, farmers reduce incidences of soil erosion and or acidification, manage crops well and even sell them in the market for adequate profits for a good harvest.
