Gateways of the Castle

The gateway to the city was facilitated by five gates, both in the Upper City and four in the Lower City. The older one was located in the Upper City on the north side of the rock and its central gate was built during the Byzantine period. Today's Central Gate is located in the western part of the Lower City. Further north along the rock, the second gate opens. Yet, smaller in size, exist in the east and the south, to the sea, the land. The latter was called Portello and served the city's communication with the sea.https://www.youtube.com/wiki

Its name is a compound word, derived from the two Greek words Moni and Ephesus. Many of the streets are narrow and suitable only for pedestrians. The bay of Old Monemvasia is in the north. The nickname of Monemvasia is "Gibraltar of
the East" because it is in a shrinking identical to the rock of Gibraltar
