Tan San Niang Self-service Hotpot
Wuhan entered the plum rain season last week, and it hasn’t stopped raining. On Friday afternoon after work, the rain was so heavy that my husband rushed to pick me up by car, and we went to Wanda for hotpot together.
(By the way, Friday to Sunday were the days for Wuhan’s high school entrance exam this year. The rain got heavier each day—it’s really tough for this batch of examinees, as traveling became extremely inconvenient. A high school near our home served as one of the exam sites; they closed the road in front of the school three days in advance, which will reopen after the exam.)
We chose a self-service hotpot place called "Tan San Niang Freshly Cut Beef Hotpot" this time. I’d never tried it before—usually, I’d go for Chao Niu No.1 or Xiaolongkan, but neither are self-service.
(Unfortunately, Xiaolongkan was exposed on China’s 315 Gala this year [a consumer rights show], so I haven’t dared to go back since. I’m scared of getting food poisoning, lol 😓! The food industry here really has so many issues—eating out feels like rolling the dice most of the time.)
Tan San Niang isn’t cheap—¥105 per person, even after a group purchase discount. But it’s worth every penny. The ingredients are fresh and diverse, offering various cuts of beef. Surprisingly, they even had crayfish last night in two flavors! I grabbed two plates: one garlic-flavored and one spicy. I didn’t dare take too much, fearing I’d be too full for the beef.
For desserts, I only picked two: an adorable cheese shaped like a cat’s paw 🧀. The fruit selection was also plentiful—watermelon, honeydew, oranges, dragon fruit, etc. Lychees were the most popular; they’d get snatched up within 5 minutes of being served. I’ve always loved lychees, so I piled up a big plate. I thought they might not be fresh, but they were super sweet and juicy! They were kept on ice in the tray, as fresh and tasty as the Feizixiao lychees I buy from Pupu Supermarket, with small pits too.
We only took 6–7 plates of beef each time, refilling after finishing to avoid waste. The drink area was overwhelming—the restaurant probably hopes we’ll fill up on drinks, braised dishes, and side dishes so we eat less beef, which means more profit for them, haha! I chose a small cup of grape juice from Nayuki and couldn’t drink anything else. Didn’t even try the ice cream.
I ate loads of spinach, which tasted sweet when cooked in the tomato soup base—highly recommended!
Overall, I’d give Tan San Niang 85/100. Since I don’t eat much, self-service isn’t the most cost-effective for me. It’d be perfect if the price dropped to ¥80–85 per person while maintaining the quality.
Still, when it comes to hotpot, Haidilao is my all-time favorite. Their ingredients and service still outshine many other brands.
