The crow and the dentures - Reading exercise and answering questions (comprehension) for Gr 1-2
Once upon a time there was an old old lady that had beautiful teeth - she was already 81 years old and everybody wondered how her teeth would still be so nice. They did not know that it wasn't her own teeth but dentures.
One afternoon at lunch when she was busy eating a piece of chicken, a small bone got stuck in her throat and she started coughing and coughing.
She could not breath properly and ran outside to find her grandson to get him to help her. Luckily he was busy working in the garden and started hitting her on the back. At last the little bone came out of her throat and she spit it out.
O goodness, she did not only spit out the bone, she also spit out her dentures. ☺☺☺
She was old, so it took a little longer to bend down to pick up the dentures. Just as she bend down, a crow came and snatched it up and flew away with the dentures in his beak.
The old women started sobbing. How will I be able to eat and what will I look like? The people are going to laugh at me, she thought through her tears.
That night the old women cried a lot.
The next morning when she woke up she saw the crow sitting in the tree and believe it or not, he still had the dentures in his mouth.
She went outside as fast as she could and called her grandson. "Look at that, the crow still has my dentures, but how will we get it from him? He is too fast for us and we will not be able to catch him."
Her grandson thought and thought and at last he came up with a plan. He went into the house and got a piece of cheese.
He slowly went to the tree where the crow was sitting and held up the cheese that the crow can see it.
That crow loved cheese a lot and he was so excited when he saw the cheese that he swooped down to grabbed it. When he opened his mouth to grab the cheese, the dentures fell out of his beak onto the ground.
The grandson quickly picked it up and gave it to his grandmother.
Grandmother was so happy and could not stop smiling - a broad smile that you could see her teeth glistening in the sun. "I am so happy, now I can eat and smile again and nobody will laugh at me for being without teeth."
That evening she told the story to her neigbor and they both laughed and the grandmother said "I just wonder how the crow knew to bring the teeth back to the right house."

This is such a wonderful story, we had neighbours with crow who always stole our spoons, when you got into his nest it was full of anything shiny.
My grandmother also had one - I always amazed me how much he loved shiny things
