80 Year Study on The Secret to Happiness Concludes. The Findings Will Shock You

in #life7 years ago (edited)

So I set about writing this in depth article on how an extensive 80 year study has come to an end. The study was about happiness, who had it, how they found it, etc.

I have been compelled to examine happiness lately, you've noticed it's a recurrent theme in my recent writings here on Steemit if you follow my work. Have you heard the phrase ~ You write what you know? Well, I'm not so sure I know happiness at the moment, however I believe I have and the feeling intrigues me. So, as I examine and research for my own personal enlightenment, so I share my thoughts and finding with you, here.

What is happiness? I don't think it's any one thing. You can have perfect health and all the toys you ever wanted, but you're not happy because something is missing. You can have great friends and family but no finances so life is difficult and you cannot pursue happiness because every minute is about sheer survival. Happiness is subjective. However there are a few things that help it along.

What is Real?

Real isn't how you're made. It's a thing that happens to you.

The study was highlighted in this months issue of Success magazine. It details the findings of the Grant Study, now known as the Harvard Study of Adult Development, using several hundred strapping young men from Harvard. The epitome of success and happiness as thought at the time. The study measured the effects of everything- success, career, love life, family, health, etc, over the course of 80 years to determine what makes us happy.

In the end, they found that love equals happiness.

The men who were ill but had love, reported high levels of happiness.

The super wealthy, even with mad amounts of toys and houses in the south of France and all money could buy, reported low levels of happiness.

The ones who had married the love of their life but suffered numerous health problems resulting in high debt were surprisingly extremely happy.

What is happiness? In the end, happiness is to have someone love you and to be able to accept that love in return.

In the end, happiness is love.

Oh nice to know! Where can I buy this "love"? Is it a new cryptocurrency?

Just joking! I already purchased a huge amount years ago and now it even increased in value. Just hold it!

Happiness is being in allowance of all the emotions you might feel and feeling them fully, without resistance. Happiness is appreciating the people who love you and loving them with all of your being. Happiness is accepting what has happened that has made you unhappy and that sometimes you will still feel unhappy, but knowing that it does not have to define your permanent state. Happiness is feeling several emotions as once and recognising the importance of every one, as even the negative ones are there to make us learn and realise things to be happier later. Happiness is being grateful for what you have and what you don't have. Happiness is finding self-love.

I'm still struggling with that last one a bit, but I think I have found happiness in my life.

Your words... Simply beautiful. Simply profound.

Thank you! :)

I agree and can vouch for this. I think you needn't only experience love with a romantic attachment, but the love between family members (siblings, parents, and children), not to mention pets can also have a significant effect on happiness.

Very true, all of this ^

Love is love. Close connection is what is needed to live a truly happy and fulfilling life.

great post. i like this one "Real isn't how you're made. It's a thing that happens to you"

Thank you Jonas :)

Great post @arbitrarykitten ,but to me, happiness comes from passion or better still, it is an inside job. It is to find that particular thing that you enjoy doing and doing it over and over till you die. That way your happiness is always dependant on you alone and that can never get you disappointed.

Heartbreak is painful, yes.

I am happy you have found your path to happiness :)

Great article. Thank you for posting. "The truth is: Belonging starts with self-acceptance. Your level of belonging, in fact, can never be greater than your level of self-acceptance, because believing that you're enough is what gives you the courage to be authentic, vulnerable and imperfect." Very true, thanks for sharing that!
