We should all be wary of statements that contain the premise “we should all.”

"We should all" is a big red flag.

It points to ideological thinking instead of dealing with reality. "We should all eat less meat." No. The Inuit, the cattle ranchers, the reindeer herders and camel herders, and the backyard duck farmers should not be eating less meat. Certainly some of us would do better eating less meat, but some of us would do better eating more. "We should all drive less." No. Then people starve for lack of trade. Some of us could drive less, but some of us could drive more as a side hustle or part of a job.

Some of these "we should all" statements are more insidious. "We should all take care of our health." No. Some of us need to do risky things like running into burning buildings to keep others safe. "We should all wear masks." No. Some people can't. "We should all not wear masks." No. Masks are really nice in certain situations, fiberglass, woodworking, surgery on a spurting artery. "We should all vote." No. "We should all believe in God." No. "We should all be atheists." No. "We should all spank our children so that they learn self-discipline." No. "We should never spank any child." No.

And then there are the difficult ones. "We should all homeschool." Some parents just are not capable of it, and are abusive. There are times when homeschooling leads children to become suicidal. And obviously, the reverse is true, there are many times when public schooling or private schooling leads children to become suicidal. "We should all leave the cities." "We should all grow our own food." "We should all use cryptocurrencies." "We should all become our own bank." "We should all walk towards freedom."

No. Even though it would definitely benefit most of us, it would not benefit us all. We have choices, and decisions to make. On a species basis, it makes better survival sense if this group does this, and that group does that, and a diversity of approaches is adopted in different places, and even within a group. Life works better without conformity.
