How does our brain memory work?

in Zero to Infinity2 years ago (edited)

Our minds are quite incredible. The brain, like advanced computers, can sort and retrieve thousands of pieces of data.
But how exactly does it work? Is it possible for our brain to make a mistake? Why do we remember some things and forget others?

Neuroscientists divide memory into three categories

  • short-term memory
  • long-term memory
  • functional memory

Each type of memory is controlled by a different part of the brain.

Short-term memory:

This type of memory is controlled by the frontal lobe.

This is data that is only stored for a short period of time and is not processed by the brain. When dialing a phone number, for example, we use short-term memory. In such a fast-paced environment, short-term memory is essential.

Effective memory:

This type of memory is comparable to short-term memory, but data can be altered or employed with the help of effective memory.

When we try to recall a phone number for more than a few seconds, for example, we write it down or share it with someone else.

The knowledge is stored in our effective memory at this point.

Long-term memory:

Long-term memories are ones we remember for a long time. A special memory of our life or some information or description from a book that really interested us or moved us deeply.

The things that are most important to us or the things that we do the most, we remember the most.

However, neuroscientists still have a lot to understand about memory. But they know that long-term memory resides in the hippocampus of the brain.

When the hippocampus is damaged, people sometimes suffer from dementia and are unable to understand, learn, or remember anything new. But they can remember everything that happened before.
However, memory is not always reliable. Sometimes our brains add details about something that didn't happen.
These details may have been told to us by someone else in the past, or we may have read them in a book that seems to fit our own lives.

Unrealistic information takes place in our brains as memories because we are not usually aware of such events.
