Life-Hack: How to Reinvent Yourself
Major life changes are never easy because the instincts work against us. But when you focus on your future, you will be surprised at what you can achieve. Your dream of starting a new business, changing home base, falling in and out of love... may all go wrong, life happens and it completely turns your life upside down. When this happens, you need a rethink. Sit back , reinvent yourself and forge ahead...
Reinventing yourself means letting go of habits, routines, past, situations and stuffs that is currently holding you back. It means changing the direction of ones life, making new choices and forging new path that expands opportunities, possibilities and hope. Reinvention means Change.
Each time a major shift happens in our lives; leaving a relationship, a job, losing a loved one... we have to choose who we want to become or risk attaining full potentials.
However, to change your life, you must first begin by changing yourself. To change yourself, requires you go through the process of self-discovery. Reinventing yourself challenges your perspective of reality. You will need to stretch beyond your comfort zone and proactively push yourself in a new direction. Reinventing yourself means building a better version of yourself. Hence, requires a commitment to growth and development, doing things differently and pushing the limits of what you previously thought was possible.
Hence, reinvention begins with you. It starts when you make a commitment to change how you work, live, and interact with the world around you. If you’re in a situation where you have to reinvent yourself, here is a guide through the journey of transformation.
Accept Full Responsibility
Your current circumstance are a direct result of the choices you have made. That is, all the choices you have made have brought you to this point in your life. Hence, the only person responsible for your circumstance is nobody else but you. others might have played a factor In some way, ultimately you chose to move down this path.
Therefore everything you have or don’t have in your life right now is your making and you must take responsibility. The key is to assume full responsibility for your life and circumstances. Take full responsibility for the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Self Assessment
To reinvent yourself and transform your life, you need to ask yourself some tough questions; Why do I want to reinvent myself? Why is it important? Why now? What do I want to achieve from this process? Are these reasons good enough? Is reinventing myself within my personal control?
The Reason for reinventing yourself must be compelling enough to push you forward. A halfhearted desire for change never works. Having identified compelling enough reasons to change, ask yourself;
What do I find personally fulfilling? What are my skills, talents, and abilities? What am I passionate about? What do I value most in life? What do I truly want? What do I want to achieve in life? What’s my vision for the future? What specific goals make up that vision? Do these goals align with my values? Do these goals conflict with other life priorities? When specifically will these goals be achieved? What kind of person do I want to become? How will I know I’m making progress? Realistically what will it require to make these changes?
However, change is only possible if you take the initiative to instigate change. And that’s where opportunities come into the frame. To successfully make changes, become aware of the opportunities that could make that change possible. Ask yourself:
What opportunities are available now that could help me optimally reinvent myself? How can I take advantage of these opportunities to create positive changes in my life? What opportunities can I create myself to help me instigate positive change?
Let Go!
The reason why the majority of people don’t make change stick is that there exist too many conflicts. You need to be willing to let go of all the stuff that may prevent you from moving forward. Let go of all the stuff that doesn’t support the vision of the person you want to become. Let go of people, habits, situations, and anything that isn’t aligned with your vision. Ask yourself:
What things must I let go of to move forward? What things are holding me back? What things don’t support the vision for the person I wish to become? What people, situations, habits, and beliefs might hold me back from making the necessary changes I desire to make? How will I begin to let go of all these things? What short-term sacrifices will I need to make?
Time to Reinvent Yourself
Imagine for a moment your future self at some point in time. It could be 5 years, 10 year or even 25 years from today. See your future self and your future life in your minds-eye. Now ask yourself;
Where exactly am I living? Where specifically am I working? What goals am I working on? How do I spend my free time? Who do I spend most time with? What do I value most in life? What skills and knowledge do I have?
Perceiving your life in this way helps you picture what your future life might be like. However, to get to that point you need to make substantial changes. And these changes begin with you, with a commitment to change yourself and align your habits, choices, thoughts, and behaviors with your future self.
With this in mind, ask yourself the following questions; Given how I’ve imagined my future life, how must I begin to change as a person? How must I change how I interact with other people? What belief would i adopt? What skills would I need to learn? What attributes will shape my character? What core values will I imbibe? How will I hold myself accountable in becoming this new version of myself?
Your objective is to permanently bridge the gap between where you are in your life now and where you would like to be in the future. However, bridging that gap always begins with change and transformation on the inside. In other words, it begins with you within.
Get out of your Comfort Zone
We’re creatures of habit. But, breaking out your comfort zone forces you to have new experiences, meet new people, and learn something new.
Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment
Try new things, experiment with new projects. What's truly important is that you are not afraid to try. Do what you enjoy and this will help you figure things out while hopefully having fun in the process
Learn
Find ways to enhance your knowledge. It will make you a rounded individual and help you grow both personally and professionally. Lifelong learning also makes you motivated, help develop mental skills, and introduces you to new people, thoughts and mindset.
Accept Failure
Along the way you have to accept that you’re going to fail. Embrace it. Learn from it. And keep moving forward. Because you can do this.
Reinventing your life certainly won’t be easy. No journey of change and transformation is easy. It’s riddled with challenges and difficulties that could very abruptly derail your efforts. However, as long as you persist and persevere, you will eventually get there.
In the end, no matter what happens, be sure to celebrate all your successes.
