Arsenic Lullaby - Fantastic Four / Galactus pin up

in #comics7 years ago (edited)

I saw a lot of nicely done illustrated tributes to Stan Lee on social media...at first I shrugged at the idea. Then while working on something else I scribbled this out and decided to give a go at making it into a fully polished illustration, thinking it might be cathartic ...

no...not the simple head-shot on the left..the complicated scene on the right. Because...why not give my eye something to really water about.

As usual, first I refine the sketch, figure out the vanishing points and what not. I like to know what's what and where's where before I start on the finished thing. Mostly because inking on a page that has patches where things have been erased several times is a real pain in the ass. The lines are tougher to see and the paper can be degraded to the point that ink bleeds instead of giving you a sharp line.

After that you just ...make the finished pencils...

GLPEN1.jpg

...are my eyes going to hell or does my camera really suck? How dafuq does everyone else get such nice pics of their original art?

anyways...then I just turn off my brain and ink away. I usually start with lines that won't harm anything if I screw them up, like the flames and energy streams. If the brush is handling okay, I'll venture onto lines that need more precision and/or are straight.

GLIMK.jpg

Basically, I don't fight with the brush. Especially on a project that doesn't have some kinda oppressive deadline. If curved lines aren't working but straight lines are...I just do the straight lines and deal with the curves later. The humidity can have an effect on what the brush will let you do, plus there is your own mental capacity...some days long straight lines scare the shit outta you...some days they seem like child's play.

GLINK2.jpg

...these pics really suck...I've tried every which way of taking photos and adjusting the settings. I dunno....seems like this camera should have a setting that is higher than 72 dpi. But hell if I can find it.

GLINK3.jpg

aaaannnnd...a scant 15 hours or so later it's all done.

gALACTUSflat.jpg

eh...it turned out alright. defiantly better than when I drew Galactus when I was 10. Although I can't confirm that. I still miss Stan, but I don't miss Galactus...I don't ever need to look at him again.

Looks great. Despite all the insanely technical work you did... I think my favorite part is the Watcher’s face. He looks like a retail employee dealing with a shitty customer. I guess this is just a boring job for him when you think about it!

LOL, I was thinking everything you just said

awesome! Thanks!

The detailing there is really cool, just that it didn't appear on the final piece with the color. Or did you blend it in, somehow?

I don't know much about Stan Lee's because I am not really into comics. what was this character like? I do love how strong and tough he looks though. Oh... The final piece there is a different one??

Yeah the very last pic is from the comic book Galacuts first appeared in (Fantastic Four no. 48 -1965 )
Yep, he's pretty tough. He eats planets.

Eat planets??? Ahhh! No, we gotta protect ours before he comes over.... Lol!😂😂😀 Now, hearing about his character kinda aroused my interest in this comic series.

I love it when artists share the step by step journey of their artwork. It makes me appreciate the drawings even more. I dunno Galactus because the only knowledge I have about Stan Lee's work is all from the movie adaptations but this artwork is seriously awesome and cool. Love your humor too. Haha.
Congrats on your curie vote. :-)

Thanks! Galactus hasn't appeared in a movie yet, has he? I think he was mentioned in one of the Fantastic Four movies with Jessica Alba...but that's about it.

What very nice way to remember Stan Lee. They say that if you miss someone, do something that he used to do. And you just did with a very good drawing. You're very diligent with the details.

I'm just curious... How is it that the second photo has colored red on the sketches while the succeeding photos do not? Should the second photo be in a different order? Or did I miss something on your post?

The red is just red pencil lead. Which I inked over. I use that lead because it doesn't smear when you are working on it, and won't reproduce if you scan in B/W

Oh, I see. I thought it was a colored pencil that I wonder why it disappeared. Thanks for the clarification.

It is obvious that this is something you really love to do and the way how you describe your drawing transmits the love to comics. I believe that was something that you have since very young ages, that is good that you still remain loyal to your hobby. You are right it is important to have a good sketch so that you have everything what you want to put together on your sketch, placement and appropriate proportion of sizes is very important, therefore, it is usual to start working with pencils and then once you are happy with sizes and characters, you put the coloring. Really nice composition and grateful for sharing your thoughts while drawing.

Thank you, I'm not entirely sold on the composition, but it turned out okay.
unmm..."hobby"?

Thanks! I'm not coloring this one...I've looked at it long enough, haha

so you are saying there is a chance ............ right?

lol

you'll see! the future might see you running back at this one with colours!!!!

A beautiful tribute, Doug. All those floating stuff makes a nice circle.

Congrats for getting another curie :).

Thank you...I hadn't really noticed the circle until I was all done ,haha. The cylinders sort of mirror a composition I'm trying to get right for something else ( I also hadn't noticed they were similar until I was done) Maybe I'll see if I can break down why this composition works and the other one is giving me trouble.
