Affordable Education Enhances a Child's Training

INTRODUCTION

The importance of education can not be overemphasized. Education is said to be the mirror at which one sees through the society. This means that one may not not be enlightened to fix into the demands of society or contribute meaningfully to the development of the society without education.

Child's right to education is widely gaining support almost at all levels of the society. This is even as some nations are adopting various education schemes, to ensure that children have access to quality and affordable education.

In Nigeria for instance, there is an education scheme known as “Universal Basic Education,” an education scheme that makes provision for basic education which involves the following:

• Early childhood care and education

• Primary education and

• Junior secondary education

This is a required global protocol and convention on education.

It also recognises the rights of children convention and “World Declaration on Education for All and framework for action” to meet basic learning needs of children. Now the UBE scheme overall aim is to provide access to quality basic education for all children notwithstanding their gender, religion, ethnicity, or status.

ESTABLISHMENT OF EDUCATION INTERVENTION AGENCIES MAKES EDUCATION ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE

In Nigeria, the establishment of the Universal Education Commision (UBEC) as a law, is to create an education intervention agency having the responsibility to administer basic education to every part of the country.

Over five decades, even though basic education is not entrenched, government educational institutions were ranked high than the private ones which were regarded then as “Commercial schools." There were just few number of the commercial schools then because the commercial ones could not compete the quality and standard of education administered then by the government.

Problem seemed to begin when givernment could nolonger maintain the standard of education as adequate funding, training and retraining of teachers became challenging. The commercial educational institutions saw the falling standard and then began to improve on their own. Then and here, this improvement began to over shadow the government educational establishments. Parents, caregivers and children starts to lose confidence in the government educational institutions. Private individuals and religious institutions now started to manage schools.

As a means to keep maintaining their schools, tuition fees of the private schools started to rise astronomically. Most parents could not afford the fees charged by the private school operators. The result of this is that, many out-of -school children begins to be recorded. This forced the government to absorb some private and most of the missionary schools to manage them. But this action could not salvage the falling standard of education even though education were becoming more accessible.

As a way to make education accessiible and affordable, the Universal Basic .Education program becimes adopted. More schools are now built by the government at all levels. The rivht of children for free and compulsory basic education are now strictly enforced. Parents or guidians who leave their children roaming around the streets, selling or hawking items during school hous, would be arrested as an offence or going against the child's right for education. This is to combat illiteracy, poverty and ignorance in the society.

I would not fail to mention that technology has also aided in making and having access to education. But at the same time, I would conclude by saying that lack of adequate funding for education, could jeopardize the efforts so far made to make education affordable and accessible to every child.
