Axeman's Travelfeed #017 - Burj Khalifa laser and fountain show part 1 - Behind The Photo Contest Entry

in OCD5 years ago

Here we go with the entry for the next, 4th edition of "Behind the Photo Contest" run by @nelyp which you can find HERE

Going back to January 2018 here is a visual story of amazing laser show on famous Burj Khalifa and a fountains show nearby

Lets start from very attractive visual of this "Spaceship" ready to discover galactics far away

Will not talk much about Burj Khalifa, just to remember that it is presently the tallest building in the world. So it is quite an issue to shoot it in full height if you stay too much close. Even wide angle lens can not help you if you are too close...

When we come in the evening we were not sure if will face the laser show. It is not every day, while the fountains are. But that was some kind of a holiday that day, so the possibility was very high and yes, we got actually lucky to see it.

First step was to find a decent place for shooting. There are always pretty a crowd of people over there. Winter is best season for tourists due quite normal temperature ranges during the day. Especially for Europeans :)
So the place had to be with clear visibility to water surface where the fountains show supposed to happen as well as to see Burj Khalifa itself. Second was actually more easier taking into account if not to shoot full height and just crop the people at bottom of the frame.
We came quite in advance so such a place was found

Second issue was obviously that need to shoot to both sides at once. Laser show and fountains. So the decision was just to put ISO on auto and set camera to T mode with 1/125 sec exposure. Well, some darker frames appeared to be on quite high ISO after all, but there were way out.
It might be interesting to shoot fountain show on a bit of longer exposure and on a tripod, however the show is quit dynamic with various fountains patterns. So, not sure about final result and had no second possibility to come back there this trip

So all those few minutes had to turn to two sides trying to catch most interesting moments. Kind of having two pairs of eyes :D
This especially hard when you see show for a first time and do not know what to expect at all

As for show itself it is just insane. Great music combined with light and fountain show. Counting what is height of Burj Khalifa the lighting should be really very powerful to be visible at such a distance. Well, modern LED technologies allows to achieve this result

While shooting fountains with quite a standard perspective and point of view, tried to experiment with angles while shooting Burj Khalifa. Catching and composing light patterns were much more interesting. Also got few light flares into the lens, making very interesting and unusual effect

After initial selection from total list of over 200 shots done, still 40 are must to be presented. So finally decided to split this theme into two parts in order not to overload the post. So second part to follow and you may like to scroll the story to the end, since most interesting photos are at the end :)
