Besides writers from Latin American writers look like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, I like literary works from Japan, especially Haruki Murakami. All Haruki works that have been translated into Indonesian, I enjoy. Of all his works, 1Q84 was very impressive and left a deep impression. Until now I still like to read some pieces from the 1Q84 trilogy.
After 1Q84, Murakami's latest book I read is Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage. This novel has been published in the Popular Gramedia Library in April 2018. The original title, Shikisai o Tazaki to, Kare no Junrei no Toshi and has been translated in several languages in the world.
At this week, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage was the literary book I read in my spare time and finished it on weekends. From the beginning, I did not find anything extraordinary in this book. In fact, I'm sorry, without reducing my admiration and respect for Haruki Murakami who was advocated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, his book this time was bland and boring — although I still read it to the end because there was always the pleasure of reading Murakami's work. I came to see the translator, who knows this work is good but the translation is chaotic. Apparently, the translator is Ribeka Ota, the same as the 1Q84 book whose story is very powerful.
According to the title, this realist novel tells of Tsukuru Tazaki's friendship with his four friends in high school. From the person's charm, only Tsukuru Tazaki does not imply color. The other four friends — two guys and two girls — had names related to colors: Aka (red), Ao (blue), Shiro (white), and Kuro (black). The color names became a call for them, except Tsukuru who was called Tsukuru.
One day, four of Tsukuru's friends said they would no longer be in touch and talk to him without any explanation, with no chance for Tsukuru to defend himself. Tsukuru felt removed, hurt, and for 16 years he kept asking why he was suddenly removed. This section is an interesting starting point for continuing the next story that was answered later when Tsukuru was familiar with Sara and the woman he considered to be his girlfriend asked Tsukuru to trace the cause of his four colleagues to dump him.
Start the journey to the past and Tsukuru finds a number of surprises. First, it was answered that the question that made Tsukuru was in the deathbed after being dumped by his close friend. Apparently, Tsukuru was accused of raping Shiro in Tsukuru's apartment in Tokyo (the five young men came from Nagoya). The accusation shocked Tsukuru because he didn't do it and didn't know why Shiro accused him of that. The second surprise, Tsukuru could not directly ask Shiro because the woman had died miserably. He was found suffocated in his apartment room.
Until the story is over, Shiro's death remains a mystery that makes the reader have to figure out the culprit. Likewise, regarding the reason, Shiro fabricated a hoax that made Tsukuru ostracized, missed until the end. Perhaps Murakami really wants to give the reader the opportunity to interpret the parts that are not clearly answered. The same thing when Murakami did not tell of Sara's relationship with the middle-aged man Tsukuru saw when he bought souvenirs for Shiro's son before he left for Finland.
Another surprise, Kuro was married to a man from Finland and now lives in Helsinki. Tsukuru went to Helsinki without making an agreement first for fear that Kuro would refuse. With the help of Sara who worked in the travel department, Tsukuru managed to meet Kuro who now has two children. The next surprise, Kuro had long since fallen in love with Tsukuru but did not dare say it.
As with the previous Murakami books, many plots were not easily guessed in Tsukuru's life journey, although in some parts the conflict was too small and made up for me. However, I tried to understand that it could happen with the thoughts, culture, and situation of Japanese society, not for me who still struggled with elementary problems such as economic shortages. Then, I consider Tsukuru's hesitant, unconfident, closed, and complicated character (although he claims to be a simple 36 man), in contrast to my character in many ways.
I could not accept, for example, when my best friend was dumped without explanation and Tsukuru kept ill for 16 years. For me, when left behind by a friend, what sin must be clear and we must fight for the opportunity to defend ourselves, it's up to them to accept or not. Tsukuru's doubtful nature is also clearly illustrated in the matter of love. Instead of saying it directly, he prefers to harbor it so that he experiences many failures in love and in social relationships with family and others. But, that's how humans are with a variety of unique characters so that life feels colorful.[]

Selain penulis dari Amerika Latin seperti Gabriel Garcia Marquez, saya menyukai karya-karya sastra dari Jepang, terutama Haruki Murakami. Semua karya Haruki yang sudah diterjemahkan dalam bahasa Indonesia, saya nikmati. Dari semua karyanya, 1Q84 yang sangat mengesankan dan meninggalkan kesan mendalam. Sampai sekarang saya masih suka membaca beberapa potongan dari trilogi 1Q84 tersebut.
Setelah 1Q84, buku terbaru Murakami yang say abaca adalah Tsukuru Tazaki Tanpa Warna dan Tahun Ziarahnya. Novel ini diterbitkan Kepustakaan Populer Gramedia pada April 2018. Judul aslinya, Shikisai o Motanai Tazaki to, Kare no Junrei no Toshi dan sudah diterjemahkan dalam beberapa bahasa di dunia.
Dalam pekan ini, Tsukuru Tazaki Tanpa Warna dan Tahun Ziarahnya menjadi buku sastra yang saya baca di waktu-waktu senggang dan menyelesaikannya di akhir pekan. Sejak awal, saya tidak menemukan sesuatu yang luar biasa dalam buku ini. Bahkan, maaf, tanpa mengurangi kekaguman dan penghormatan saya kepada Haruki Murakami yang dijagokan mendapatkat Nobel Sastra, bukunya kali ini terasa hambar dan membosankan—meski saya tetap membacanya sampai akhir karena selalu ada kenikmatan membaca karya Murakami. Saya sampai melihat penerjemahnya, siapa tahu karya ini bagus tetapi terjemahannya yang kacau. Ternyata, penerjemahnya Ribeka Ota, sama seperti buku 1Q84 yang kisahnya sangat dahsyat.
Sesuai judul, novel realis ini mengisahkan persahabatan Tsukuru Tazaki dengan empat temannya di masa SMA. Dari kelimat orang tersebut, hanya Tsukuru Tazaki yang tidak menyiratkan warna. Keempat temannya yang lain—dua cowok dan dua cewek—memiliki nama yang berhubungan dengan warna: Aka (merah), Ao (biru), Shiro (putih), dan Kuro (hitam). Nama-nama warna itu menjadi panggilan bagi mereka, kecuali Tsukuru yang memang dipanggil Tsukuru.
Suatu hari, keempat teman Tsukuru mengatakan tidak mau lagi berhubungan dan bicara dengannya tanpa ada penjelasan apa pun, tanpa ada kesempatan bagi Tsukuru membela diri. Tsukuru merasa disingkirkan, disakiti, dan selama 16 tahun ia menyimpan pertanyaan mengapa ia disingkirkan secara tiba-tiba. Bagian ini menjadi titik awal yang menarik untuk melanjutkan kisah selanjutnya yang terjawab kemudian ketika Tsukuru akrab dengan Sara dan perempuan yang dianggap sebagai pacarnya itu meminta Tsukuru menelusuri penyebab keempat rekannya mencampakkannya.
Mulailah perjalanan ke masa silam dan Tsukuru menemukan sejumlah kejutan. Pertama, terjawab sudah pertanyaan yang membuat Tsukuru berada di amban kematian setelah dicampakkan sahabat akrabnya. Ternyata, Tsukuru dituduh memperkosa Shiro di apartemen Tsukuru di Tokyo (kelima anak muda itu berasal dari Nagoya). Tuduhan yang mengagetkan Tsukuru karena ia tidak melakukannya dan tidak tahu mengapa Shiro menuduhnya demikian. Kejutan kedua, Tsukuru tidak bisa menanyakan langsung ke Shiro karena perempuan itu sudah meninggal secara mengenaskan. Dia ditemukan tewas tercekik di kamar apartemennya.
Sampai cerita selesai, kematian Shiro tetap menjadi misteri yang membuat pembaca harus mereka-reka pelakunya. Demikian juga mengenai alasan Shiro mengarang cerita bohong yang membuat Tsukuru dikucilkan, tidak terjawab sampai akhir. Barangkali Murakami memang ingin memberikan kesempatan kepada pembaca untuk menginterpretasikan sendiri bagian-bagian yang tidak dijawab secara jelas. Hal yang sama ketika Murakami tidak menceritakan hubungan Sara dengan lelaki paruh baya yang dilihat Tsukuru ketika ia membeli oleh-oleh untuk anak Shiro sebelum ia bertolak ke Finlandia.
Kejutan lainnya, Kuro sudah menikah dengan lelaki asal Finlandia dan kini tinggal di Helsinki. Tsukuru pergi ke Helsinki tanpa membuat perjanjian terlebih dahulu karena takut Kuro akan menolaknya. Dengan bantuan Sara yang bekerja di bagian travel, Tsukuru berhasil bertemu dengan Kuro yang kini sudah memiliki dua anak. Kejutan berikutnya, ternyata sejak lama Kuro jatuh cinta dengan Tsukuru, tetapi tidak berani mengatakannya.
Sebagaimana buku-buku Murakami sebelumnya, banyak plot yang tidak mudah ditebak dalam perjalanan hidup Tsukuru, meski pada beberapa bagian konfliknya terlalu kecil dan mengada-ada bagi saya. Namun, saya mencoba memahami bahwa itu bisa terjadi dengan pemikiran, budaya, dan situasi masyarakat Jepang, bukan bagi saya yang masih berkutat dengan masalah elementer seperti kekurangan ekonomi. Kemudian, saya menganggap karakter Tsukuru yang ragu-ragu, tidak percaya diri, tertutup, dan rumit (meski ia mengaku sebagai lelaki 36 yang sederhana), bertolak-belakang dengan karakter saya dalam banyak hal.
Saya tidak bisa menerima, misalnya, ketika dicampakkan sahabat karib tanpa ada penjelasan dan Tsukuru menyimpan sakit selama 16 tahun. Bagi saya, ketika ditinggalkan sahabat, harus jelas dosanya apa dan kita harus memperjuangkan kesempatan membela diri, terserah mereka bisa menerima atau tidak. Sifat ragu-ragu Tsukuru juga tergambar jelas dalam masalah cinta. Alih-alih mengatakan secara langsung, ia lebih memilih memendamnya sehingga ia mengalami banyak kegagalan dalam cinta dan dalam hubungan sosial dengan keluarga dan orang lain. Tapi, begitulah manusia dengan berbagai karakter yang unik sehingga kehidupan ini terasa berwarna-warni.[]
