Legend of Masamune dan Muramasa Sword

in #legend7 years ago (edited)

Muramasa Sengo (千 子 村 正 / Sengo Muramasa) is a famous swordsman who founded the sword-making school. Muramasa lived during the Muromachi period (16th century) in Japan. In a book written by Oscar Ratti and Adele Westbrook said that Muramasa is a well-known swordsmith who is good at making his sword but has a cruel and crazy stature, his cruelty and madness is reflected on every blade of his artificial sword. The silhouette and the blade of the sword plus the sharpness of each side of his sword made him capable of showing the cruelty of the creator and the user of the sword.

The majesty of Muramasa's artificial sword finally fell when Tokugawa Ieyasu was appointed shogun and founded Tokugawa Shogunate or Tokugawa era in 1603.
It is said that, Ieyasu has lost many relatives and friends due to the sword Muramasa which had also hurt him. So he forbade the samurai to wear the swords / katanas made by Muramasa in the Tokugawa era. Being labeled as a murderous sword and a pervasive negative stigma then many histories that include the sword are altered and even removed. Even since the frequent rebellion in tokugawa era with the muramasa sword used for rebel weapons, katana forgery on the name of artificial muramasa was often the case.

Muramasa's sword in Tokugawa era is often compared with the Masamune sword. Honjo Masamune, is a Tokugawa Shogunate symbol sword that made the Masamune sword, a famous Japanese sword maker in the early 14th century who is said to be a former teacher and student.

Masamune Okazaki is also often called by the name Goro Nyudo Masamune (priest Goro Masamune), is a legendary sword maker from japan. It is unknown what date and year Masamune lived, but many believe he lived in the late 13th and early 14th century, 1288 - 1328. He made a sword known as tachi and knife as tanto in the Soshu tradition. He is trusted to work in the province of Sagami. Masamune was trusted to work in Sagami province at the end of the Kamakura era (1288-1328) and he was also trained by people from Bizen and Yamashiro provinces as well as Kunitsuna and Kunimitsu. Masamune's sword-making style is famous for its beauty and quality. Masamune learns to make a sword under the guidance of Shintogo Kunimitsu and he creates his own style by combining the two streams of swordsman he learned and perfected. The famous sword of the famous is Honjo Masamune which is a sword passed down from generation to generation to each shogun.

Masamune's swords are often compared with Muramasa's swords. Many who call this Masamune sword symbolize peace while the sword Muramasa is a sword symbolizes a blood-thirsty sword. Actually the time of the two sword makers is so different that to compare very difficult, the legend circulating is very unreliable because the result of the sword made by these two people have their respective advantages and disadvantages. And these two sword makers were greatly admired in their lifetime.

There is a legend of the Masamune sword and the sword Muramasa, both swords are put together into a river full of lotus leaves. The lotus leaves rotate around the two swords, the Masamune sword is not touched by lotus leaves but the lotus leaves near Muramasa's sword and cut the leaves.

Why is Muramasa sword considered bloodthirsty? Historically it is also written that the gamut of sword must be exposed to blood or take the blood of a person before it can be re-sheathed, even to force the wielder or better known as samurai to injure himself or harakiri without realizing it. Therefore, this sword is regarded as a cursed sword or a demonic sword that creates bloodthirsty people or samurai while using it.

very interesting story. I don't really like weapons because of their destiny to bring the bloodthirst but some of them may be considered as an piece of art. Especially samurai swords :)
