Nicobar Islands - an Inaccessible Paradise - TERRA INCOGNITA

in #travel8 years ago

To the south of the Andaman Islands, which we have considered, is the Nicobar Islands. The islands are much smaller, there are only 22 islands in them, 12 of which are inhabited. Of course, they are no less beautiful than their northern neighbors, and are very attractive to tourists and the tourism industry. But Nicobaras is not accessible to various visitors, the Indian government has banned the free entry to them. Why was this decision made? What is the history of the mysterious islands?

The beaches here are no worse than the Andaman beaches

The first mention of this archipelago dates from the 11th century, when a Tamil ruler conquered the Andaman and Nicobar. It is worth noting that the inhabitants of the islands are called "unclean". Then, for a long time nothing was known about the area, although the sailors knew about the area, but they were avoided because of rumors about the wild with a dog's head. Finally, in the XVIII century there were Europeans.

Map of the islands

Firstly, Denmark tried to control the land, then for five years the islands were transferred to the crown strength of Austria. By the way, this is the first and only Asian colony of Austria-Hungary. The islands are named after Theresa in honor of Queen Maria Theresa, the natives agreed to move to a new owner, placing as many as three crosses on the document. Colonization is involved in 6 (six, I do not miss a toe). Austria, who were dying of starvation and fleeing, did not receive help from their homeland. After that, English Nicobar wins, as we know, no hesitation in the development of new land to destroy some people under the roots and built on the island of th RMY. In 1956, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands became an alliance of India, which almost immediately closed them to tourists and scientists, protecting the local tribes. It is now possible to get entry permission to a certain area, after issuing a special document. Andaman becomes much easier, and the infrastructure for tourists there is better: hotels, hotels, diving centers, ferries, beaches, etc.

Memories of the Austrian period are preserved only in the name Fr. Theresa

In addition to Theresa, it can be noted:

  • itemBig Nicobar's largest island, almost completely covered in forest. This is where the strange men of Szompens live and the southernmost point of India lies at the point of Indira;

  • itemLittle Nicobar, from which during the earthquake and tsunami in 2004, the entire population was removed in a short time;
    Trinkat, split in two by the elements during the same earthquake, the indigenous people living on it were resettled to the Great Nicobar;

  • itemKar Nicobar, the most populous island in the archipelago. Here live 30-35 thousand people, half of the population of Nicobar. Most of them are engaged in agriculture, because the island is almost flat, which is very convenient for farming. There is no city, people are scattered in 15 villages.

I will tell you about the Nicobars in the next section, the populations of the islands are very interesting from the standpoint of genetics and the law of evolution.

Nicobar is unique

Noteworthy is the fact that the administration of several islands, particularly Kar-Nicobar, is struggling for the reception of tourists at least in the same volume as the Andamans. No wonder - the beach of paradise, untouched nature, endemic animals and birds are able to attract even the most sophisticated travelers. This will give a strong impetus to economic development. Today, people live by catching fish, farming, making furniture and souvenirs, which generate certain small incomes. The Indian government strongly opposes mass tourism, as visitors can unwittingly destroy tribes, carry infections and viruses, and transport affects the ecology of the region.
