It is estimated there are only less than 5000 Anoa living today, Anoa is often hunted for the skin, horns and flesh. There are two types of Anoa in Sulawesi, the Anoa Mountains (Bubalus quarlesi) and the Anoa of the Lowlands (Bubalus depressicornis). Unfortunately, in recent years, the Anoa of the Lowlands who became the Southeast Sulawesi mascot has never been seen again.

Generally, Anoa has a brown skin color like a buffalo, and its head has a pair of horns that are straight back. Some places that are still a habitat for protected wildlife include the Lambusango Mountain Nature Reserve, Lore-Lindu National Park and Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park.
