The last princess of Gomel - a monument Irina Paskevich.

in #travel7 years ago

This is one of those places worth visiting, if you arrive to Gomel! In the central part of the city, on the street Irininskaya (52.428887, 31.005198), which was renamed in honor of this noble lady, in September 2013, a monument was erected to a wonderful woman, Princess Irina Paskevich.

In the collection of funds for this monument, many residents of the city participated, and the famous sculptor Dmitry Popov worked on the creation of the sculpture. The sculpture, two meters high, is made of bronze. Irina Paskevich is presented as the tall woman of years of 35 standing on a step and holding a handrail.

Princess Irina Ivanovna Paskevich was famous for her charity work, she is known as the first translator of the novel by L.N. Tolstoy "War and Peace" in French. The activities of Irina Paskevich for the improvement of Gomel are invaluable. In 1915, the Gomel Palace and hospitals, arranged by the princess, were twice visited personally by the emperor of Russia, Nicholas II. Princess was the last mistress of the estate in Gomel, which now bears the name of the palace Rumyantsev - Paskevich.

Tragic fate of this woman. After the October's Revolution of 1917, Irina Paskevich stayed in the city and transferred all her property to representatives of the Soviet government. The last years of her life, Princess Irina Ivanovna lived in poverty, forgotten by everybody, in solitude and prayers. Princess Irina Ivanovna Paskevich died on April 14, 1925, at the age of 90, was buried near the wall of St. Peter and Paul's Cathedral.

In the image of bronze sculpture, Irina Ivanovna returned to the city, into which she had invested so much. Unselfish and versatile activities of Irina Paskevich have always remained in the hearts of citizens. They are proud of the fact that the name of this amazing woman who lived a long and dignified life is connected with the history of Gomel.
