DAYDREAMING

Alvin was there, staring into space,
He simply stared, as though at an exhibit in a glass case.
He looked long at her, clearly in awe,
And Alvin definitely like what he saw.
Although she had a face like a mummified monkey,
Although she had the wild, bloodshot eyes of a junky,
He thought he detected an inner kind of beauty,
And he knew, right then and there, to know her was a duty.
That is to say, a duty he could not ignore.
After all, such unions were what boys and girls were for!

Alvin, himself, was physically scrawny,
And, at the risk of sounding somewhat corny.
He thought what a skinny, svelte couple they could be,
Yes, the two of them, both he and she.

He went on, right over, to ask for her name,
“Narelle Bumstead, but I’m not to blame,”
“My parents thought it to be funny and cute,”
“He who laughs will feel the wrath of my foot!”

So, Alvin, right there, knew very well,
It was for whom the bell tolls, she had rung his bell!
“Permit me to ask if you’d care to dance?”
Narelle looked back uncertainly, slightly askance.
“Impervious to my imperfections you may be,”
“But you’ve failed to notice, I’ve a plaster cast on my knee.”
“Since I am thus so immobilized,”
“My full potential is somewhat disguised!”
