Coinbase Announces Intent To Support ERC20 Tokens

in #bitcoin8 years ago

Well, this is huge news for cryptocurrency. Coinbase is arguably the largest and most known platform for buying Bitcoin and Ethereum (in part, due to the fact they accept credit cards). And they have just announced they will be supporting the Ethereum ERC20 technical standard in the coming months.

Given the turbulent period that cryptocurrency has gone through since December 2017, this is much welcome news. It has been rumoured for months that Coinbase would eventually list some ERC20 tokens.

It appears the intention is to first list coins on GDAX and then once they have evaluated numerous factors like liquidity, price and stability, then they will decide if it should be added to Coinbase. This means GDAX will most likely have a lot of ERC20 tokens in the coming months, the tokens that aren't skirting regulations or classed as securities that is.

This is a big deal because about half of the top one hundred cryptocurrencies are ERC20 tokens. I think it's safe to say you'll highly likely see the following ERC20 tokens make it onto Coinbase first.

  • Basic Attention Token
  • EOS
  • Stellar
  • QTUM
  • Lisk
  • Waltonchain

This is an exciting time for cryptocurrency, Coinbase wields a lot of power in this space.
