Privacy vs. Transparency

The following debate will be open based on the post: https://steemit.com/steemit/@behindsteemit/behind-steemit-5-free-steemit-censorship-everywhere in which evidence was presented about the controversy caused by the possibility that regular Steemit users could have access to all the information about what happens in the Steem blockchain.

If we take a look into the posts uploaded to this account, we can see a rise in the number of transfers of doubtful nature, alternative accounts and massive voting circles, whose main problem is the fact that they're seem to be missing pieces in a puzzle that would allow us to understand how a certain situation was reached, this, consequently, produces some uncertainty in a large number of users. What would happen if all this information is set free to the regular user? Would a network of money flowing behind the scenes be unmasked? Could the possibility of editing or hiding this information take us away from the free platform that was once promised to us?

Although from the perspective already stated, obtaining an absolute level of transparency seems to be quite necessary, we must also think about the implication that this would have for the ordinary user, since we would lose the ability to protect the privacy of our particular accounts within sensitive issues that can generate disrespectful reactions, which would be exposed to anyone who wants to access them. How willing would we be to lose the ability to protect our privacy in exchange of getting all the information about what happens behind Steemit? What could be the point of balance between our privacy and the integrity of the platform? At what point do the movements or transactions of a user become a matter of the community in general? and even more, at what point do they become deprived within a platform whose foundation is freedom of expression?

Yes, freedom is the foundation of the platform, but also transparency is a foundation of most of the blockchains.

The tranfers, votes, etc, affects the community as a whole, and that kind of data must definetly by transparent.

Personal infos, and anything that could create a situation that can directly harm a person should be kept private, but actions that affect the community as a whole must always be transparent.

That's the point. How do you create the balanced rules to keep the community as transparent and honest as possible without damaging the privacy of their users?

A big subject to deal with.

I think we do have a balance here.
I think It is pretty hard to know who is behind each account, but everything done on the blockchain is transparent and acessible.

What you do here is important, highlight some suspicious activities. But its up to the community to judge what is foul play. Sometimes dont workout, but its what we have.

Thank you for posting this.
As a new user I wouldn't have found the first post, you included. I registered because I thought that this would be a free form of communication, backended by the security of a Blockchain.
I first wondered, what has Steemit Inc. todo anymore. I thought it would be like the Ethereum Foundation.
Now this post made me thining and I started to read more and more. Now I'm thinking, that Steemit isn't really that what I wanted to sign up for. Partially because I didn't inform myself enough, partially because all this information are pretty good hidden.

We can't deny that this is a great platform, but, in the big spectrum, isn't what we thought. If we expand and enter the complexity of the platform, we can see many failures that deserve and should be fixed. It must be clarified that Steemit is still in beta, so these errors are justified. It can be taken as innocence of the platform or ... something else. It remains in the actions of the users and it's judgements.

When nobody speaks about it, nobody would know about it. That's why I really like your posts. As long as the failures aren't publicly know, nobody works towards fixing them.

What if we say its just one sided?

Could you elaborate on that?

Hi, thanks.
This is great information. I'll continue using this platform.
BTW I want to provide lots of value. Therefore, I now start writing on steemit about artificial intelligence. Check out my latest blog post --> https://steemit.com/technology/@martinmusiol/understanding-artificial-intelligence-blog-post-3-how-does-ai-identify-objects-in-images

I follow you know, resteemed and liked your post.

Best,

steemit is perfect

So what exactly happens behind steemit? This platform as interesting as I find it, is meant to be as transparent as possible. What sort of info would endanger a user? Kinda still wondering, seeing that this site is a social media. Folks should know to keep their private info private and away from social media if they think there is a possibility of unpleasantness. But as regards to steemit everything ought to be transparent with restrictions, limitations ,flags and caps executed as at when due and necessary, and made known on the platform. Well as for the share of rewards seems like a 'particular cabal' are the major beneficiaries. Well, what do I know, maybe they have put in the works? Maybe not. Just make every details and happenings as open as reasonably possible. As for posts being of value to this community, that should be looked into. Peeps go up and post stuffs about the meal they are eating at the moment and clearing earnings cause they know some friends in high places. How is that of any use to the platform and it's users? Please y'all have that checked. Originality and value should be the watchword here I believe.

In theory the transparency should keep people honest, but we can see that some just don't care what anyone thinks about what they get up to. They will just take the money and run. I'm here for the long term. I am aware that my actions are all visible and take that into consideration.

As a newcommer, a fell honored participate. I am glad someone finally decided to make things happen.
