Hobbs and Shaw(2019) Review
Hobbs and Shaw is a spinoff from the popular Fast and Furious franchise. It is an action/SciFi movie based on the events that connect two prominent characters in the later sequels of the Fast and Furious Franchise.
Hobbs is played by Dwayne Johnson(The Rock). He's a no nonsense police officer who presumably has superhuman strength and recovery from injuries. He's also shown to be easygoing, friendly and nice to anyone who doesn't offend him.
Deckard Shaw played by Jason Statham, is a badass rogue spy for the United Kingdom. He has affiliation with MI6, CIA and is also presumably a hitman for hire. He's very rich, has connections all over the world and is also a no-nonsense individual. He's willing to kill or hurt just about anyone that gets in his way(even his own brother). Despite this, he has a soft spot for his sister, mother and the very brother he was forced to kill in the past.
The movie centers around Shaw's sister, Hattie(played by Vanessa Kirby)a member of the British police force who got in possession of a very dangerous weapon to keep it away from the villain.
It is also worth mentioning that Hobbs and Shaw have a lot of badblood, on account of the fact that Shaw almost killed Hobbs once in the past, when he was hunting down everyone involved in critically injuring his brother(that he killed later on).
Hobbs and Shaw are portrayed as alpha males who barely see eye to eye on anything and have differing lifestyles. Shaw also points out that Hobbs lacks finesse on account of his size and Hobss also pointed out that Shaw doesn't know how to relate with people.
The villain of the movie was an ex MI6 colleague of Shaw played by Idris Elba, who worked for an unknown association that has influence over the media, police and other key aspects of the society. The three individuals were framed for a crime they didn't commit and had to clear their name by taking down the bad guy, in typical action movie format,
The adventure took them to the birthplace of Hobbs in Samoa, where his Usos(brothers) aided in the final battle against the bad guys. It was also in this place that a romantic relationship ensued between Hobbs and SHaw's sister.
The movie is packed with action scenes and some insane car stunts that would keep you at the edge of your seat. I also have to commend the graphics and makeup teams for doing an amazing job in those aspects. It also had a lot of humour, particularly the foulmouthed exchanges between Hobbs and Shaw,
Despite the abundance in action scenes and the fact that the movie was a baffling over 2 hours long, it had a rather tepid storyline and a lot of annoying Hollywood cliches; like the scene where Hobbs mum suggested the Usos fight against a group of mercenaries with guns using their "fist and heart".
Personally, I enjoyed the movie because I'm a fan of action movies with some humour embedded in it. I also watched the movie under the assumption that Hobbs has superhuman ability and Shaw has superhuman accuracy. It is a dope action movie you can watch once and just laugh over the absurdness of what you just witnessed.
