Dimitri Petit in Utrecht (A Tasteem Review)
Every time I'm in Utrecht (Netherlands), I love to visit this little hole in the wall take-away. Dmitri Petit is the name of the takeaway, but it is owned and run by the same Greeks that operate the "proper" restaurant across the road!
As you can see in the above shot, the restaurant is along the small street (beware of bikes riding up and down!) that leads to the Dom, which is the main church in the city of Utrecht. Unfortunately, I wasn't thinking of scenery when I took this photo, and the Dom was behind me, rather than ahead framing the street and restaurant... Oh well, next time I will have to remember, I guess that's why I'm not a photographer as my day job... or night job!
The food here is fast and tasty... and as a bonus cheap! As you can see from the board, it is 6 euros for the Pita Giros, which is more than filling enough for either lunch or dinner. For vegetarians, there are also grilled options for you as well! They are often quite generous with the servings, and there is quite often a basket of grilled goodies by the window for anyone to just taste, if you are on the fence!
Although it is similar to the doner shops from the Middle East, the Greek version of this meal is quite different in taste. In particular, I find that garlic sauce (Tzaziki) much nicer than the stuff that I find in the Turkish take aways here (although, that said, the Turkish take away food here is nothing like the good stuff that they serve up in Turkey!), it is more yoghurty rather than garlic tasting.
Your food is grilled and cooked as soon as you order, however, as it has been cooked already on the spits, it is more like a regrilling. Thus, the waiting time between order and eating is quite short... unless there is a big line!
There is no room for sitting down, however the restaurant opposite (which has the same owners) has seats outside where you are allowed to sit and eat. Eating outside is great when it isn't raining, but the eaves are just wide enough to allow some shelter. In the hotter months, there is also a misting device which sprays every now and then to help with the heat, so it is also a nice place to just sit and slowly eat in the fresher air.
A nice little bonus is the fact that there is a great ice-cream shop just around the corner, so after you tasty Giros, you can finish it off with a well deserved ice cream!

Ah, delicious gyros! Your photo should come with a warning not to look at it if you are hungry -- may cause weight gain!
Terrific photos! @bengy Those little dive restaurants can hide some incredible food!
Ha ha, this is definitely not everyday for! It is super tasty, but it is pretty greasy! Hence the nickname amongst some of us, the Greasy Greek!
