Character

The general over view of the book of Timothy was to teach us about character. This epistle bears the impress of its genuineness and authenticity, which are corroborated by the most decisive external evidence and its Divine inspiration is attested by the exact accomplishment of prediction which it contains respecting the apostasy in the latter days. That is the general view of the book of Timothy.

In chapter 6 its embraces the following subjects of counsel and exhortation:
All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God's name and our teaching may not be slandered.
6:2 Those who have believing masters are not to show less respect for them because they are brothers. Instead, they are to serve them even better, because those who benefit from their service are believers, and dear to them. These are the things you are to teach and urge on them. The kind of instruction was to be given to servants. They to treat their masters with all proper respect. If their master were Christians, they were on that account to serve them with the more fidelity and opposite kind of teaching would tend only to stir up strife and produce dissatisfaction and contention and could proceed only from and self-confident heart.

1Timothy 6:6-8 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
6:7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.
6:8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. The advantage of piety and contented mind. The argument for this is , that we brought nothing into the world, and can carry nothing out; that our essential needs here are food and raiment, and that , having enough to make us comfortable, we should be content.

The duty of those who were rich for it is supposed that some Christians will be rich either by inheritance or by prosperous business. They are :

  • a. Not to be proud
  • b. Nor to trust in their riches so as to forget their dependence on God.
  • c. To do good with their property and
  • d. To make their wealth the means of securing eternal life.

"1 Timothy 6:17-19 .Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
6:18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
6:19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life
"

In conclusion Ephesian 6:5-6 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.
6:6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart.

The Apostle Paul was teaching us that the grace was giving to us by God by his lovingkindness but after the grace what sustain us in that grace is character. Character is obtain by the doctrine of Jesus Christ that is the Gospel. I will entreat everyone of us to live by the word to develop that character.
