Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, said that the tsunami early detection tool, namely the buoy in Central Sulawesi, had been stolen. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said some people were intentionally destroying tools related to disaster measurement and detection.
"(Authority) BPPT. But not only buoys, some of our elements are vandalism. They expect little profit. Our sensors, even though it is very important, some are damaged," said Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation, Tiar Prasetya, when contacted Monday (01 / 8/2018).
The Indonesian government had installed several buoys after the tsunami in Aceh in 2004. However, the tool was no longer functioning for a long time.
"The Buoy operates BPPT, what we need is the data. But surely our damaged buoy is not working. Boy is for validation, if there is no buoy we wait visually," Tiar said.
In addition, Tiar also criticized the culture of the Indonesian people in dealing with disasters. Indonesia is considered not ready to face disasters that are routine in Indonesia.
"It is useless to install sophisticated tools, if the public is not aware of the country's interests, it is damaged," Tiar said.
Tiar gave an example of the actions of the Indonesian people in facing the vulnerability and disaster cycle. Culture like that should be changed by all Indonesian people.
"We have to form that culture, create a community aware of disasters. Disasters are cycles, disasters continue to occur. Now there is a disaster after that there is a cycle after a disaster, after that there is another preparation for disasters. Our habits, disasters are shocked responsive, after a reactive disaster , after that forget, "said Tiar.
Previously, Maritime Coordinating Minister Luhut Binsar Panjaitan had a theft of BMKG's earthquake and tsunami detection devices. The tool called the buoy was stolen by irresponsible people.
Luhut gave an example, for example in Palu and Aceh, the disaster detection devices were not spared from theft by irresponsible people. Luhut said this related to the earthquake and tsunami incident in Palu on Friday (28/9).
"We remind the community, please do not steal the buoys. So much is in Aceh and in Palu, so the early warning can arrive late," said Luhut in his office, Central Jakarta, Monday (1/10).
