Tangerine - Film Review

in #film6 years ago

Tangerine was directed by Sean Baker who co-wrote it alongside Chris Bergoch and it's about a transgender prostitute who, having just been released from prison after serving a 28-day sentence, meets up with her friend, also a transgender prostitute, and learns that her boyfriend/pimp has been cheating on her. Outraged by the news she goes on a tirade around the city in search of them both and brings her reluctant friend along for the ride. There's also a subplot about an Armenian cab driver who pays transgender prostitutes to let him suck them off.

The most impressive thing about Tangerine is that it was filmed entirely on iPhones and it looks great! Visually it's pretty stunning, it's bright and it's colourful and it's shot very well. The story takes place in Hollywood on Christmas Eve and the film captures the feeling of the city, the contrast in what we've come to know of Hollywood and the gritty underbelly of it where this film takes place, there's a ugliness to it and it looks like a fucking nightmare, especially when it's populated with characters like these, I pretty much fucking hated them all!

The only character throughout this hour and a half nightmare that I didn't mind was Alexandra, played by Mya Taylor, she's the only character I didn't find immensely irritating and I liked the stuff with her and her performance at the bar which she's trying to get everyone to come to, I cared! As far as everyone else, they were all loud mouthed, moronic disgusting human beings and I hated them all, I wasn't invested in them and I cared not one bit about their pathetic issues within this cesspit of an existence, it was like watching a shoe box full of fucking rats!

Sonically it gave me a fucking head ache, not only does the main character never shut her disgusting fucking mouth, there's multiple scenes with characters all talking at once, talking over each other and shouting at each other and it was not an enjoyable experience at all, I hated these characters, I hate this world their in, I had no sympathy for them, I wasn't invested in the story or their motives or their relationships, I also didn't find it funny at all for a supposed comedy film, I think I chuckled once, maybe twice if I'm being generous, it's not for me.

I'm not their audience, I didn't enjoy this film and it's because of these characters, I didn't care about Sin-Dee's relationship with Chester, played by James Ransone who also played Ziggy in The Wire, he was a little shit in that and he's a little shit in this, I would have happily watched both him and Sin-Dee being tortured to death, especially Sin-Dee I fucking despised that cunt! I don't recommend this film to any one, unless you want to hear prostitutes calling each other bitches and talking about their weaves! I'm giving Tangerine 5.7/10, it's just not for me.
