By now I have given up on my choy sum (cai xin) growing on the roof. But even though I stopped watering them, some plants are still growing & providing food for some insects. Where there are insects, there are insect eaters.
Had no idea what that is. At first I thought it might be some kind of praying mantis nymph, but the anatomy doesn't really fit. After some searching I found out that it's probably a kind of assassin bug.
This one had caught a tiny kind of bee. Because they are so small, I almost only used macro extension tubes for the pictures, although it's almost impossible to get the whole bug into focus. To give you an impression of its true size:
Length without feelers was under 1 cm. There were a few of these assassin bugs on the choy sum plants, but like the stick insects, they tend to keep something between themselves & an onlooker. Hence it was not too easy to get close enough with the camera.
This photo shows nicely the thorns on its body & the hairy legs with black dots.
Above you can see the rostrum quite well, which is used to inject saliva & to suck out the liquified contents of the prey's body.
This is perhaps a sister of the assassin's victim. Size & looks fit. It's probably some kind of bee, but couldn't find out which species.
Then there was another kind of tiny bee, perhaps some mini bumblebee. Again, I couldn't find out which species it is:
Quite a hairy little fellow, particularly the backside.
Ziemlich haariges Viech, besonders der Hinterleib.
Then there were these tiny eggs on a weed growing in between the choy sum:
They are probably assassin bug eggs, although I couldn't find an exact match. But the only ones which otherwise looked similar to these were from parasitic wasps which lay their eggs on prey. &, well, this plant doesn't look like wasp prey.
The flower of this weed looks almost like chrysanthemum:
Then I thought, I really got lucky. It's almost impossible for me to get close enough to a fly for a macro. But there was one on the choy sum which probably wasn't really warmed up yet. So I was happy that I could take some pictures before it took off.
Turns out, none of the photos was properly focused. The above was the best, with the the wings in focus. But what can you do, if even aphids are too big to be completely sharp:
Tja...
Downstairs, in the yard, there was also quite some activity. The night before it had rained for the first time in months & suddenly millipedes were everywhere, in all sizes. This is one of the bigger animals, around 4cm long:
& finally I took some photos of the snails aestivating in a flower pot (well, more like a barrel) in the yard:
This is probably the species Theba pisana, but sure, I am not.
A few non-insects in this post, but should be more than enough insects for @whatisnew's #insectpub. That's it for today. Just a few more pics:
Wow! Wow! WOW! Incredible photos you have here!!! You caught the murderer red-handed! And if that wasn't enough, you found eggs too. Amazing!!! I am so happy that you shared these photos with all of us and I am also very happy that your wrote in English too. Congratulations on your well deserved @c-squared and @ocdb curation! : )
Assassin bugs are really cool, one species has figured out how to fool spiders by gently tapping on their web to mimic a small insect struggling, then they assassinate the spider when it rushes out :) Another species of assassin bug glues the corpses of ants it kills onto its body, but only ant corpses and not any of the other kinds of bugs it kills. Kinda gruesome but awesome.
Loved seeing all these glimpses into the bug-scale world, macro photography is so awesome in that regard :) Great post! Cheers
I read a study that tested the efficacy of ants vs. other insects in lab setting and the assassin bugs that had either nothing glued on or other bugs besides ants were something like 90% more likely to be preyed on by the spiders than the assassin bugs with ants glued on their back. This kind of stuff is fascinating to me :)
Proboscis
A proboscis is an elongated appendage from the head of an animal, either a vertebrate or an invertebrate. In invertebrates, the term usually refers to tubular mouthparts used for feeding and sucking. In vertebrates, a proboscis is an elongated nose or snout.

Never heard of that ant-gluing assassin bug. Will check it out.
Edit: Already found it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acanthaspis_petax
Looks crazy. Hard to believe that's effective.

Last night I watched a BBC video which showed that ants really don't attack such an assassin bug. Interesting.
I don't think I have seen anything similar to this before, but they are lovely.
Well, lovely...
As long as you're not the one on the end of the rostrum.

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.
What is rostrum?

Wikipedia prefers the term proboscis, but it's the same:
"In invertebrates, the term usually refers to tubular mouthparts used for feeding and sucking."

Yeah, it's interesting to see, but you shouldn't think too much about what's actually going on.
