SLS32-The Kitchen Diaries Week 1: Magic with 3 - [Garri Sticks Et Chocolate]
The first thing that came into my mind when I saw this challenge was white rice. This can be cooked with the three magic ingredients and still become edible for eating, though it would need a complement. These three magic ingredients are undoable ingredients because without oil, you can't fry, and without water, you can cook. Unavailability of salt makes food tasteless.
So this challenge wants us to create a new recipe, and I'm going to do that – a recipe that's unknown to me but known to others. A Steemian taught me this recipe which I'm about to introduce, and I'll be very strict with the ingredients, as the challenge entails only 3 main ingredients.
Salt
Water
Oil
These are the three ingredients I used.
Task 1— Prepare a recipe |
|---|
So the recipe I want to make for this challenge, or made for this challenge, is called Garri Sticks et Chocolate. I'm the one that gave it this name. It's actually uncommon in my country to fry something that has already been fried. Garri or cassava flakes, is what I used in my recipe, and I fried what had already been fried.

These are the main and sub-ingredients I used in preparing my recipe, and it came out well.

Steps used in preparation |
|---|
- To prepare these garri sticks, I had to arrange my ingredients first so I wouldn't forget to add any or rush to add them. After sampling them, I added 3 cups of white garri in a bowl and then 2 teaspoons of salt in a bowl. I then boiled water for 5 minutes. While waiting for the water to steam, I emptied my 3 cups of garri into a big bowl and spread it so the hot water can touch every part of it and make it soft. After that, I added the salt into the bowl of garri and mixed it thoroughly and tasted it to ensure it had a good taste.

- The water was done, and I took it from the heat source and emptied it into the bowl and ensured the water touched all the dry garri, and it became soft. I allowed for 1 minute before mixing it with a turner. If you allow the garri to cool off for 3 minutes, it becomes very strong. I didn't want it to become strong. So I took advantage of the heat.
- After mixing, I emptied it inside a tray and started moulding it like a flour that's mixed with butter and egg. I added drops of oil to remove the sticky effect of the already-made Garri. I moulded it for 6 minutes before cutting it in pieces. This isn't flour, so I didn't use a roller. I used my hand to roll the garri with groundnut oil to grease it. I then used my hands to roll them up in sticks, as you can see. I also made doughnut shapes from it.

- After that, I dipped the garri sticks into the chocolate bowl and placed them back into their tray. I then used a deep fry of groundnut oil to dry it until it was golden brown. That was how I was able to achieve this. I fried the garri doughnuts before the sticks. I then placed them on a plate and coated them with chocolate pudding and still left the pudding in a small bowl so that it could be used to complement the Garri sticks.

- This is my final product. After preparing it, I fried my potatoes and banana chips with salt and groundnut oil and then placed them on a plate with a fried egg. This was to complement the food and not part of it, sha.

The Story Behind It |
|---|
So there's this Steemian who prepared these garri sticks and posted on Steemit. I was kind of interested in it and told myself I would try it because I never thought garri could be used as flour and then fried into sticks that can still be edible for consumption. 2 months after he did this, I saw this challenge. I decided to hop on it because it required the use of the 3 ingredients the Steemian used in preparing this recipe, which I followed.
I choose these ingredients to make the recipe because they add taste and prominence to the recipe. I never thought of frying something that had already been fried, but it came out as the best snack I ever tasted. It's actually an experiment I tried, and it came out 90%.
I thought it would come out in pieces because it was my first time doing this and I had a lot of doubts. In fact, I posted it on my status, and the Steemian I got inspiration from, inspired me to keep pushing. I was scared, but when I saw my experiment results, I was overjoyed. My siblings ate and wanted more.
Your Thoughts on Simplicity |
|---|
This is even what I wanted to talk about because there are people that can't cook with limited ingredients. They'll want all their proposed ingredients to be available before they make something nice out of another thing. The simplicity in the use of these 3 ingredients is that you can cook with what you have, and it will still turn out well. Who knew I would use just 3 ingredients to bake Garri Sticks? It's impossible to imagine, but I thought of it and came up with an action plan. That's how I'm able to achieve this.
The process was hard because it was my first time trying out this new recipe, and it took me 5 good hours. It was more difficult than I expected, but after I was through, I didn't even feel the time spent. Like I said, I learnt that you don't need to have elaborate ingredients before you can cook a simple meal.
With oil, Maggi, salt, pepper and water, you can cook groundnut oil rice, and it comes out sweet. You don't have to wait until there are fish, onions, tomatoes and others before you cook. Those in rural areas can attest to the simplicity in their meals and how they manage the use of available ingredients.
Final Presentation |
|---|
These are my garri sticks and chocolate pudding. I gave it a name, and its name is Garri Sticks et Chocolate. Very nutritious and the best snack I've tasted this year that comes out almost as flour. This is my identification on it.
