Power, Influence, and Greatness - choose it daily
I have been on a kick the last 6 months or so about he concept of powerful people. I remember in my younger years reading and learning different aspects of History - reading biography's/autobiography's about people that had in impact on History - and I always separated myself from those people as un-attaianable.
There was a natural assumption that I was just a little fish in a big world. Which is true. There is nothing about anyone that will cause them to suddenly have influence or power. Their may be some aspect of someone that goes 'viral' for a brief moment - but those people will not write History on one moment of being an internet sensation. They will be great because they choose to engage their challenges today.
Power, Influence and Greatness are built over time. There are daily choices driven by a bigger purpose. That purpose keeps powerful people motivated and choosing to dominate their day. They are bent on slaying their personal dragons/demons/challenges.
As a wee lad I used to watch World's Strongest Man Competition on the tele. I was amazed at their feats of power moving massive boulders, pulling fire trucks, or throwing massive anvils. Doing a little research on some of these guys and you will find they all are driven my something. To work out 10 hours a day, eat the amount they do, and sacrifice different aspects their lives to be the World's Strongest Man is incredible, but it is driven by something beyond themselves.
What makes powerful people that have influence is not because we see them on the tele, news, or whatever. What makes powerful people is they have built an internal framework of choosing to be great on the daily thats led to what we see on the external as a powerful person. It's a daily choice motivated by a purpose that allows you to exert your power on the circumstances of the day.
Any given day and be brutal - people can be jerks, circumstances can come crashing down, sickness can be lurking. In spite of all of these powerful people choose to be disciplined and attack their monsters on the daily.
Those monsters have many names -
- Fear of Failure
- Nobody will like me
- I have nothing to contribute
- I am weak
- etc...
My encouragement for you today is to choose to be great today. It can be as simple as cleaning your room, or getting to work on time, honoring your boss. As you choose it on the daily you will only grow in your power, your influence will gradually increase and greatness will become your new paradigm.
Got to choose it today though -

I've struggled some with feeling that I am great at things that often are rather invisible to larger society. I'm a badass mom. I put a lot in it. I have sacrificed a lot of other things to raise amazing kids. They're truly wonderful people. This is something I feel our culture doesn't really value.
In fact, for lack of a better word, many feminine gifts are really undervalued. Let me just be clear that I understand that many men posses these traits and take on these roles. I'm talking about things like teaching, caregiving, nurturing, compassion, communication, collaboration, etc.
Anyway, I'm gonna keep on being badass at it. I can always shake it off, but it does hit me sometimes.
Haha! badass mom no doubt - building world changers...your the only one that can do it -
totally agree that stay at home parents are way undervalued in our society - i think thats a greater conversation no doubt - you keep on being badass and raising kids that are going to rock history
My kids are gonna rock some shit! One day the world will realize the value of a parent at home. Maybe that's not so far off. Things are changing quick!
That is so super 80s fantastic.
This guy looks solid as hell!
Nice post man. I think the concept of power is very much an instinctive cause too. It's tough to distinguish, but I think dominance has a huge role in this.
Nicely done.
thanks - appreciate you reading along
You chose daily whether you are great or not!
Your example with WSM is really super; I remember Derek Poundstone having his daily fishshakes and I think it was Dave Ostlund who said: "I hate eating, but it's part of my training!"
I mean, if you aren't driven by something, you won't do this!
loved WSM growing up...and who wouldn't want a fish shake?
I admit, I grew up and still love it... I was shy before competing a couple of years ago before a injury stopped me. But fish shakes?? No, thanks :)
thanks for reading!
