TASK: CONTENT ETIQUETTE

           PLAGIARISM

IMG_20220119_150919_558.jpg

Good afternoon my fellow steemians, I am glad to be back here to write my achievement 3. Knowing that plagiarism is a serious crime, I will be talking about what it is and how to avoid it as this is very important to writers and content creators like us.

Plagiarism is the act of presenting a person's ideas or work as your own with or without their given consent and incorporating it into your work without giving them full credit or acknowledgement. Plagiarism can be done in either published or unpublished articles and even in electronic form and it could also be intentional or unintentional. It is an act of fraud and piracy and it is a punishable offence.

          TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

DIRECT PLAGIARISM;

This is one of common types of plagiarism and it involves copying another person's work verbatim without changing anything and presenting it as one's own work without giving credit or acknowledgement to the creator or enclosing it in quotation marks.

PARAPHRASING WITHOUT CREDIT;

This is a type of plagiarism that involves paraphrasing someone else's work into one's work without giving credit to the author or acknowledging where the ideas came from.

MOSAIC PLAGIARISM;

This is related to paraphrasing without given credit but the difference is that this type of plagiarism is partial. This involves partial revision such as adding and deleting few words from sentences, replacing some words with their synonyms, and taking short phrases from the source and adding to one's work. The result is that the work still has the original author's ideas. This type of plagiarism is also known as patchwriting since the work eventually becomes a patchwork of the original work.

SELF-PLAGIARISM;

This type of plagiarism involves submitting a work you have already submitted in the past. Simple put, combining your previous work to create a new work is self-plagiarism. For instance, writing an article about 'effects of sugar on teeth' in kids community and posting the same article in newcomer community is self-plagiarism.

ACCIDENTAL PLAGIARISM;

This is an unintentional plagiarism which usually happens when you forget to cite your sources. It could also mean if ideas you borrowed from the original source is not attributed properly.

MISATTRIBUTION;

This involves attributing a piece of information to the wrong source. For instance, your work presents a demographic data of number of people living in the south Pacific island and indicates that the information was gotten from an article by author A despite the fact that the information actually comes from an article by author B. This is considered plagiarism because it has an incorrect source and the correct source was not given due credit.

        HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM
  1. Cite your sources: when using someone's work or ideas, add a citation in your writing that includes the full name of your source, the date it was published and any other important citation element that is required by the style who are adhering to.

  2. Include quotations: if you use a person's work/words verbatim in your writing, you need to use quotation marks around the texts to copies to denote that the words are not yours and this is the simple,yet obvious way to avoid plagiarism. A direct quote should also cite the source so that people know where the quote is from.

  3. Paraphrase: reword and format your writing in an original way, and try as much as possible to avoid using too many similar words and phrases from the source. The Key is doing this without altering the meaning of the idea itself and always remember to cite the source since it is another person's ideas.

  4. Present your own ideas: instead of copying someone else's work, explore what you have to say about it. Challenge yourself about the unique perspective and points you can contribute in your writing that is particularly your own.

  5. Use a plagiarism checker ✅: after writing your article, and you are in doubt, you can use an online plagiarism checking tool that can help tell if the work is plagiarized before submitting the work or publishing it. Their are so many plagiarism checkers online, such as the one offered by small SEO tools. Grammarly also offers an online plagiarism checker that helps scan for texts for borrowed contents for free. These tools help you know if your work is plagiarized or not.

   CONSEQUENCES OF PLAGIARISM

In steemit community, plagiarism is a serious offense and it is not treated lightly. Though the community accepts all contents, but whenever we post plagiarized or copied work, we can get into trouble for violating copywrite law. Posting a plagiarized work can make us ;

. Be banned from writing and posting in that community we posted the plagiarized article.
. Can be downvoted by community members and steemcurators.
. Will make us loose our reputation in on steemit.
. It can make our work not to be taken seriously.

CITATION
This is all about making sure that when you quote somebody's writing, you put in quotation mark and cite the source. For example

The fact is that carrots contain much health benefits for the human body.

Carrots have calcium and vitamin k, both of which are important for bone health.source

However, carrot can also make your skin turn an orange-yellow color if you eat it too much.source

From the above example,
The first sentence is an original sentence.
The second sentence is lifted word by word from a source without alterations and that is why it is in quotation block and has a source too.
The third sentence is paraphrased and has a source too.

        SUMMARY

Knowing now how serious plagiarism can be, we need to be very careful as to avoid it at all cost. It is extremely important to acknowledge the source of the work, give credit to the author and cite the reference that we used.

I have read and understood the steemit etiquette on steemit community and will do my best to embrace them at the end of this taste post. Thank you all for this task and see you all at my next task which is Achievement 4😊😊😊😊
