Building a smart watch with Raspberry Pi.

in #tech7 years ago

Hey guys, over the next month or so (I say month because I wont be finished until I print my watch holder) I will be building my own smart watch with Raspberry Pi. It will feature a 3.5" face with speakers, a camera, wireless, and bluetooth connectivity. So far I have designed a makeshift prototype case using Styrofoam (as it was what I had lying around). Over the next few weeks I will be posting photos of the watch progress and software progress (Im coding my own virtual assistant).

The first prototype case was too bulky -

So I trimmed the edges with a razor blade, giving it a more snug fit -

Without the watch chain

Final 3d print design idea

Ill be posting some of the software I've been developing for my SmartWatch RPi later.
Cheers,
Max

Sweet. I need to read more into the raspberry pi, I've been hearing great things.

Its great! Well worth 30 bucks. Plus you can get a touchscreen for it with only a few bucks more. Its really cheap but has lots of uses. Im just making a smartwatch out of it, but you can make mini computers, phones, laptops, robots, or anything really that involves a computer. You imagination is the limit (And your 1.2Ghz processing speed, but hey)

And tech skills! (which I tend to lack) but can always be improved.

Anything I can do to help you (Questions, writing scripts, assembly advice etc.) just let me know.

There are tons of cheap projects out there that can help you improve your skills if your motivated. As well as tons of interent documentation. Hell Ive never even touched an Rpi before and Im already building a smart watch.

The sky is the limit my friend. It just takes time to learn and a creative mind to invent.

I really appreciate that! I gave you a follow and will certainly keep you in mind my friend. Thanks for the inspiration and will to help!

flame treated wooden casing might be doable, if its light enough to wear.

Thats a good idea - let me figure out if it would be light enough.
Thanks!

Yeah pine could work - but its not nearly as light as balsa or cedar.
Is this what you were talking about btw?

And then use it to make a casing for the Rpi?

yeah cedar would look nice with that.. casing should work, long as there isnt too many cables to setup and drill thru or chisel out

Yeah it would look pretty cool. The only thing I have to drill is the power cord holder, other then that its just open (I may have to make some air openings to keep the cpu cool, but no wires)
Thanks for the good idea.

the wood should keep it cooler. you could create a flap hinge block to access the cord area maybe.. just running ideas. will be nice tv see if you can sort something.. if not, maybe another project another time.

That is a great idea - it may have to be for another time though, maybe this winter. I need to save up some money for the wood, saw blade (maybe I can borrow one from a neighbor), and some other stuff.
Ill post some pics when I make it though, I'll make it real nice.

What you going to use for the strap. The predaror gauntlet looks awesome.

Ill probably 3d print a case that can snap in and out with a pushbutton. Either that or Ill use some sort of elastic material and build my watch into that. Im still tossing around strap design ideas though, so Im open to ideas.

And yeah it does - I just looked it up. Looks real nice.
