Borobudur is a Buddhist temple located in Borobudur, Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. This temple is located at approximately 100 km to the southwest of Semarang, 86 km to the west of Surakarta, and 40 km to the northwest of Yogyakarta. This stupa-shaped temple was founded by adherents of Mahayana Buddhism around the 8th century AD during the reign of the Syailendra dynasty. This monument consists of six square terraces on which there are three circular platforms, on the walls decorated with 2,672 relief panels and the original there are 504 Buddha statues. [4] Borobudur has the most complete and most extensive Buddhist relief collection in the world. [3] The largest main stupa is located in the middle while crowning this building, surrounded by three circular rows of 72 perforated stupas in which there is a Buddha statue sitting cross-legged in a perfect lotus position with the Dharmachakra mudra (hand gesture) mudra.

This monument is a model of the universe and was built as a holy place to glorify Buddha as well as functioning as a place of pilgrimage to guide humanity from the worldly lust to enlightenment and wisdom according to the Buddha's teachings. [5] Pilgrims entering through the east side begin the ritual at the base of the temple by walking around this sacred building clockwise, while continuing to ascend to the next steps through three levels of the realm in Buddhist cosmology. The three levels are Kāmadhātu (realm of lust), Rupadhatu (tangible realm), and Arupadhatu (realm of intangibles). In this journey pilgrims walked through a series of hallways and stairs by watching no less than 1,460 beautiful relief panels carved into the walls and balustrades.

Borobudur is now still used as a place of religious pilgrimage; every year Buddhists who come from all over Indonesia and abroad gather at Borobudur to commemorate Trisuci Waisak. In the world of tourism, Borobudur is a single tourist attraction in Indonesia that is most visited by tourists
