Fashion Portrait: Jocelyn
I love doing fashion portraits. I have done a lot of them in the past. They're essentially the headshot portion of the model test. Show the model's features and ability to emote and wear tricky clothing without getting lost or looking ridiculous.
Being a model photographer, I have always been a fan of shooting females to look-- well, different. I'm tempted to say, in a more fashion way. What I'm trying to say is- I generally won't shoot new female faces to look "pretty". Nope. The agencies don't want it, I don't want it, and the models enjoy the challenge of looking cool, edgy, different, androgynous, powerful, emotive, interesting... anything but pretty. There are plenty of other photogs out there perfectly willing to shoot pretty style. Pretty is too easy with these gals. I like to push them in different directions. This way we end up with better, more useful photos, and developing skills of not only the model, but everyone involved. It's tricky to get a different look without looking weird or like you're trying too hard. It's also a bit of a nod to the women themselves- although modeling is, yes, all about your "look," you are more than pretty and you are capable of so much!
All that being said, we still need the shots to be usable in the model's book, so they can't be too "out there!" It's a delicate balance!
This shot of DEJAVU model Jocelyn is one of my favourites. She is very good at subtle facial expressions, and has this funny little natural quirk to her lips. We kept it minimal and chic with the black turtle neck and on-trend black hat. The incredible Zaheer Sukhnandan absolutely rocked the minimal-yet-poppin makeup look and the "I-don't-care" hair.
Jocelyn has done well, traveling to big markets such as Milan to work with big agencies. I really love shooting models as New Faces, then watching them grow and take off!
Looking back at the metadata now, I have no idea how I got this sharp... 200mm @ 1/60 sec! Maybe I was using my tripod. I honestly don't remember.

Beautiful portrait! I still think, she looks very pretty, but in a cool way!
Thank you!! You're right- it's impossible for these gals to not look pretty in some way! We just try to bring the cool factor to the forefront :)
Cheers- thanks for checking out my work!
I love the highlight on the lip, nose and forhead bridge, it really drives the viewer to the models amazing eyes. Wonderful shot.
Thank-you Donna! When makeup and lighting work together, magic happens!
Have a great day! Cheers!

I've got to say, this facial expression screams RBF - resting bitch face. I'm sure she is a lovely person, though!
