Rostros - Mahalia, freshness and versatility in R&B
Encounter and sonority
Music is a way of finding ourselves and finding things that we do not conceive of in everyday life, whether they are sounds, lyrics or even images. At the same time it is a space for the attainment of freedom through melodies and harmonies.
Mahalia is an example of search and encounter through innovation within music. When listening to his songs we can remember Lauryn Hill or D'Angelo himself in the sensuality of his beats.
With her we can not afford so many similarities because her voice has something that makes the difference between many artists and in turn, has the joy of having achieved a whole original production that fits with its essence, which turns its creative process into something more than an encounter.
What makes Mahalia's music different is that it not only has a great voice but the use it makes of each song. He knows when to make short melodies, to dilute them on the beat, to soften, to rest, to solve, to hurry intentionally, to repeat.
We can notice it in its theme Sober produced by Maths Time Joy (who surely must be the culprit of this great achievement).
Innovation & Purity
Making themes that are rich in freshness is a process that demands a lot of naturalness from the artist and is what makes Mahalia so innovative in terms of modern R&B. When she sings you feel the nostalgia of women like Billie Holiday or Aretha Franklin who left a legacy in Jazz or Soul, but it is simply the simplification of a language that seeks to compile all the freshness that our ears have perceived to impose a totally innovative atmosphere.
There's some Hip-Hop in her, but it's not a limit, because just as she does what may seem like a simple ballad with great resources, she can give a sudden twist and make you a more danceable theme without losing that way of wrapping us in her voice on cold nights, she's someone who can achieve conciliation between R&B and Pop. You feel in Do Not Disturb:
Mahalia sings with his blood. It is the voice of a sky and at the same time of a jungle, because its melodies simply move as if they were waves observed by the palm trees of an island.
Music nowadays depends a lot on the visual content, it is not a question of appearance but of establishing concepts or codes that compose the artist beyond music. Mahalia is an artist who exposes this idea with a lot of power, her twists, her hairstyles, her looks make her music take on different senses and give us different perceptions about her personality, her role as an artist, appearing from time to time as a wild Latin or a Jazz singer in the 60s.
All this is combined with his videoclips, which is the maximum visual reinforcement, the most adequate space to show his codes, to have stories like I wished I missed My Ex, which is one of the themes where we notice a different Mahalia, with a more moved theme with Gospel influences and different to all the previous ones.
The intention of most artists who resort to radical change is simply to make their audience think and is a way to teach and enrich our cultural heritage, an opportunity to expand the horizon of good taste.
Mahalia marks these times, leaving a mark as an artist and as many musicians of his generation. It will surely give us more content to imagine and extend the enchantment that radiates with its sonority, it will evoke negritude, freedom as the original synonym of Jazz and it will whisper songs for our own encounters. It will probably simplify life.
