BUSTED! Chinese Government Busted by HARVARD for Hiring 2 MILLION Trolls Online.

in #news7 years ago (edited)

One of the biggest problems with the Internet is the popularity and influence of trolls among social media platforms, news comment sections, and mobile chat platforms.

Hopefully, this Harvard study helps bring awareness to some of the tactics of these trolls and their bosses. Harvard University researcher, Gary Kind, just released a bombshell article in the American Political Science Review about how the Chinese government between 2010-15 through numerous organizations, businesses, and associations have made about 448 MILLION online posts with nearly 2 MILLION paid trolls.

Let that sink in for a moment. 448 million posts by an army of 2 million trolls. These specific trolls are called 50c party members because they get paid 50 cents to write and post each comment.

.50 x 448 million posts = a 244 million dollar cost to fund and support this little troll nation.

Why would the Chinese government spend 244 million dollars to do this?

The Harvard study concluded it is because of one word: Strategic Distraction.

After a detailed analysis of all these trolls posts, the common goal that unified all of them was that their purpose was to distract the commentators and steer the conversation into topics of shared interest among many Chinese citizens like national monuments and celebrations. This conclusion is contrary to what most people think a troll's intent is which is to win the argument.

The Chinese determined the tactic of Strategic Distraction was a more effective social engineering tool then the alternative and worth at least 244 million dollars of their budget.

What do you think? Is strategic distraction a better way to influence people than to try and win an argument outright?

What happens when Steemit goes into the Chinese marketplace and these trolls start infecting Steemit?

thank you sir I love researching material like this glad you liked it

Wow, that strategic distraction makes so much sense, since people usually have a defense mechanism programmed in them around the views that they have. Instead of arguing against a brick wall, they navigate around the wall with the alternate topic. This was a very interesting read keep it up!

Exaactly what the Harvard researchers thought. Great minds think a like ey? :)
