Paschal was the only child of his parents this is so because his sister died when she was eight years old. His father, Odega, was a well-known businessman. The family was known for their wisdom and peace. Paschal was well taken care of. When he was eight years old, he was in the fourth grade at his school, a well-known school in their village. Paschal took the first position in his class, so his father bought him special gifts every time he took the first position to make him happy.
People loved this child Paschal very much because of his wisdom and intelligence. They praised him by calling him different sweet names. The great names they called Paschal made him full and confident in himself; he did not study his books as he used to read, which made his classmate take the first position in his class. This fits the proverb that says "a great name kills a puppy".
On the day of school closure for the section, Paschal came third; when he heard the announcement of his result by his teacher, Paschal threw himself on the ground and cried. People were very sad when they saw the kind of tears he had shed. The teachers told him to get up and go home and try again next section.
When Paschal reached the road, he fell on the ground again and cried because he remembered how he would tell his father that he was the third person in his class examination, which he had never had; rather, he had always come first person in his class.
While he was on the way crying, a man came out and asked him what was wrong with him. The other students told the man what was wrong with him. The man said to himself: "This shows that this child is a smart child, for crying because he came third in his class".
When the man persuaded him to stop crying, he picked up Paschal from where he was crying, He told him to shut his mouth and told him that there was a chance for him in the next school section that he could beat the first person. He reached into his pocket and took out some money for Paschal and told him to go. Paschal took the money from him and thanked him, took his school bag and went home.
When he got home and told his parents what happened, his parents also encouraged him to work harder in the next academic section and never be carried away by the praises of people. He adhered to the advice he had been given, put more effort into his studies and came first in his class in the next academic section.
