Crop Selection and Cultivation

Some of the factor to be considered when selecting a crop to cultivate include:

1. The edaphics factor: This is one of the most important factor to consider because it deals to the level of fertility of the soil. When the soil is not fat the crop will not grow and perhaps if it happens to grow it may not be able to yield well.

2. Climate factor: When you are able to understand, the different climate change we have and the type of crop seed to plant that is compatible with the different climate change then your good to go. In the case of melon seed, Cucumber seed, which does not need much rainfall, you plant it in the beginning of the year where the rain is not yet much.

3. Biotic factors. This are diseases, pests, predators, etc. So when selecting a crop to cultivate the biotic factors is important because it helps you know what biotic factors the place you want to cultivate have.

◉ Explain the difference between monoculture and polyculture farming ?

Monoculture
What comes to your mind when the talk of the world Mono. This simple means One.
As the name implies monoculture farming, one can easily see it as a process of cultivating a particular crop on the farm.

While

polyculture.
In the monoculture farming I talked about farming a particular crop. But in the polyculture, this deals with the process whereby farmers cultivate two or more crop on the same piece of land.

◉ What are some traditional and modern methods used to enhance crop yield ?

This include some of the following.
Crop Rotation
This is a system of farming whereby different crops are grown on the same piece of land year after year in a different pattern so as the fertility of the soil can be maintained.

Application of fertilizer.
This helps in replenishing the lost nutrients from the soil and increase the productivity of the crop.
