I feel like most of the answers I've read only tell part of the story. These are not all simple questions. I am going to try to give detailed answers.

  1. Yes and no. There is certainly a chance you could become a big YouTuber. Whether you have a good channel or not, there is still a lot of luck involved. I am subscribed to a lot of small YouTube channels (most of which like myself specialize in educational content). Some of these are great channels that have fewer than 100 subscribers, at the same time I've seen some increase from less than 1000 to to over 100,000 in very short periods of time (Wendoverproductions is a recent example), and it really doesn't mean they have better content, many of these channels have great content. The truth is there is a lot of luck involved and if you are doing a YouTube channel just to become famous you are just going to be another drop in the well. Many of the videos I made because no one else had made a video discussing the topic (What is teteration?, What is jerk/higher orders of motion?, Why a century can never begin on a Sunday?) There are several interesting topics I have found that haven't been discussed on YouTube and so I try to tackle them.

There was a recent front page post about something Bo Burnham said about not listening to famous people like Taylor Swift. For every channel that go lucky there are probably 100 more with similar content that didn't succeed.

Having said all that, I still believe that if you stick with it long enough and improve your content the answer is inevitably yes, it just takes a lot of time. If you release quality content on a regular basis sooner or later your going to gain some traction, but it's far more likely to happen later. (Exurb1a exploded recently after he pretty much stopped making videos for over a year. It really appears like he had given up on his channel, and boom he now has 155k)

  1. This still depends a lot on luck but, if you, are making good content and doing your part to convince people to subscribe and spread the word as much as possible, You shouldn't have too much difficulty reaching 100 subscribers eventually. I see a lot of good channels stagnate between 100 and 1000 subs, to get much more than this usually something has to "go viral" and as mentioned before that has a lot to do with luck. (Another example Numberphile had a viral video about cutting a cake, the creator of that channel has mentioned how amazed he was with all of these mind blowing concepts he discussed that this simple little video is his most successful.)

  2. Now you need to ask yourself "why am I doing this?" If you are just wanting to get big you might as well quit now and go buy a lottery ticket, it will be a lot less painful when you fail. Most people are going to fail at YouTube, and the combined effort of all of these failures is truly tragic. However if after 5 years you are happy to have 100 subscribers and an occasional comment telling you your videos are "really great", then maybe the cost/reward ratio is worth it for you. Personally, I try to only make content that is original/ hasn't been done by anyone else.

  3. This is actually the easiest question to answer. You spread the word to as many people as possible, and expect most people will not want to listen. Tell friends/family. Post on facebook, twitter, Tumblr, Reddit (Don't spam, there are many subreddits for this), Voat, etc. Just let everyone know you made something you think is great and you want them to see it.

4B. I personally have an Adobe creative cloud membership, and Blue Yeti microphone, but you work with what you have. (GradeAunderA has made some great videos with windows movie maker and his Samsung phone for a microphone.)

Extra note: As mentioned before I see a lot of small channels not gaining the traction they deserve, and that because for every 100 random people who watch a video 1 of them might take the time to either like a video, subscribe to a channel, and this is the most important share the channel with the people they know. If you find something that you think is great let other people know, especially if they are a small growing channel. We have all done this, personally I have seen a few great channels I didn't subscribe to because they actually had zero subscribers and I felt weird being the first. I know that is terrible, but I am a lot more likely to like/subscribe/share great content now.
