The Seven Days Beer Challenge: Legend Extra Stout
On Beers in Nigeria
You could easily tell the country I'm writing from just be seeing the size of our beer. Here, every beer is about the size of a wine bottle, each containing at least 60 cl of beer. So when you read stuff like:
With 12.28 liters per year, Nigeria leads the top 10 biggest beer drinking countries in Africa, by virtue of her population, which technically results in higher volume and liters consumed per year. Beer makes up just 16 per cent of alcohol consumption in Nigeria, while other drinks make up 84 per cent due to the high popularity of home-brewed beverages.[1]
It is true. We have the population, and of course, the "size advantage".
Beer No. 1
The first beer to be featured in this challenge is Legend Extra Stout, manufactured by Nigerian Breweries PLC who also manufacture Heineken in Nigeria.
It is a dark-coloured beer with a bitter taste. I haven't had time to shop for beers so for today, I went to a bar and selected Legend because I had never tasted it before. It was bitter. A little less bitter than Guinness Foreign Stout but bitter nonetheless. The beer came in a 60 cl bottle which was surprising to me because most stouts are considered strong beers and often come in smaller bottles.
Background
Most people don't know stouts as beer but they truly are even though they have more bitter and stronger tastes compared to light beer. It is usually made by roasting malt (which is the usual grain for beers). Roasting malt used in brewing stout gives it the darker appearance and chocolate, coffee and sometimes tobacco flavours. Hopefully, at this point, someone like @abigail-dantes would be wondering why any person would go to the trouble of making something that has such tastes and why someone would want to drink it. Well it turns out that people do not drink beers because of the taste. It is a means to an end: getting drunk.
Historically, dark coloured beer, made from dark malt has been manufactured as early as the 18th century. However it was the invention of the roasting kiln by Daniel Wheeler in 1817 that brought about stout as we know it today.
Brewers began to use roasted black malt, and this enabled them to create a different beer from what was known as a Porter. However the name stout came from Arthur Guinness when he named his porter beer as Extra Stout Porter. In Nigeria, Guinness stout is still one of the most popular stout brands which many nicknamed 1759, the year the brand was established.
The known types of stout in existence now are Foreign or extra stout (which Legend is one).
There are also milk stout, Irish stout, oatmeal sound and more recently, blonde stouts. From experience, they all have a bitter taste even though I had hoped that legend would be different. No such luck.Would I drink the Legend Extra Stout again? Yes, when I want something bitter. Lol

It does not take a long time for someone to fall down on the sexual dependence of beer consumption.
So the prospect is cautious to try this drink. Many people have been deceived and consider drinking better vodka or whiskey. In fact, beer and vodka both have harmful effects. Actually, alcohol destroys our brain cells and this process is very fast in teenagers and youth.

That sounds ominous. I guess I will just have to stop after the seven days challenge :) You did not mention any positive thing about beer though.
