Review: Is Netflix's From Dusk Till Dawn Series as good as the Movie?

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Dear Steemit Friends,

I just recently finished the first of 3 seasons for Netflix's original series From Dusk Till Dawn. I'm one of those people who enjoys spending my free time watching movies and series. Because I occasionally binge-watch movies and series, I often find it difficult to find anything worth watching on Netflix because I go through their selection so fast - maybe I watch too much Television.

I have glanced and passed over the Dusk Till Dawn series many times, but eventually found myself giving it a chance simply because I enjoyed watching the original movie which was released in 1996. If you haven't seen it, I definitely recommend it. This movie (in addition to desperado) literally put Salma Hayek on the map and made her one of Hollywoods sexiest actresses.

When I first saw this series scroll by on the select screen, I figured that the series would probably be a poor recreation of a movie that wouldn't last more than one season. Clicking on it and noticing that it had 3 seasons got me interested that it might actually be something worth watching. If not for anything else, at least I could see if anyone could recreate Salma Hayek's bar scene.

The Series, like the movie, focuses on the Gecko brothers who are wanted by the authorities after a bank heist leaves several dead. They eventually escape to Mexico and end up taking a family hostage on a trip to meet a contact for a deal at a strip club in that is populated by vampires.

The series does a good job filling in some of the gaps from the movie and helps to develop the characters a bit more. On the flip side, the series does try to separate itself from the movie and changes a few aspects and details, which I'm on the fence about. In the series, Richie Gecko is portrayed as a Genious who is a bit psycho due to events in his childhood and visions he gets as a result of his connection to the vampire (or snake) princess.

The series also changes the supernatural aspect of the movie as the vampires are replaced by blood-sucking snake people. It retains the blood and gore aspect of the movie but because of the snakelike vampires, it just doesn't make sense. crosses don't hurt the snakes, but sunlight burns them and stakes to the heart seem to kill them, and a bite from one does turn you into a snake creature, but it doesn't really explain why?

I did enjoy watching the first several episodes of season 1 and enjoyed the recreation of scenes from the movie, but as I watched more, I felt like the story was starting to drag a bit. Near the end of season 1, all I could think about was wondering when the series would end and wondering how they could be unique and expand it over the next two seasons.

The actors of the series are not too bad and I enjoyed the constant banter between the two Gecko brothers, however, I don't think they did as good of a job as George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino. In fact, I don't think any of the actors in the series were good enough to replace the original cast of the movie. Although some of the cast is more attractive, I would prefer the movie over the series.

I am actually surprised that from a rating and review perspective that the series got such high marks and feedback. I am in the minority when it comes to actually loving this series. Overall, I think its ok, but I don't think it's portrayed on the small screen as well as it is on the Big screen. This is definitely not something that was meant to be drawn out into a series and should only exist as a movie. I'm not sure if I will continue watching season 2 and 3 and currently the show is in renewal limbo and may potentially be canceled.

If you have watched the series or any single episode, do you agree? What are your thoughts on the series?

After reading your review, i recall that i already watched the series, however from my point of view, i gave it only 3 /10. That is why i do not remember it well :D because i do not liked it.

Hope to have more reviews from your side. I am on more current sides of TV like TheBlackList, Suits, Westworld, Mr. Robot. I hope you are following them as well ;)
