The Documentaries of Ken Burns

Known as the most epic maker of documentaries of the past several decades, Ken Burns reinvigorated the documentary movie and popularized it among the masses. His colossal undertakings beginning with the highly esteemed "The Civil War" series cast new light on the power of docs to educate and inspire. Continuing with his insightful use of overlapping interviews, photos, and videos he produced the multi-episode "Jazz" and "Baseball" series for PBS as well. Ken has always used a team of archivists and historians to thoroughly research his subject and material. Ken delivers a rootsy Americana that is not overly sentimental nor patriotic, but addresses the real grit of history, perseverance, pain, and relief.

Other series of note include "The West" which explorers the myths and American cultural connotations of the physical and psychological expansion of the American landscape, while also addressing the impact on Native Americans. In a similar vein "Lewis and Clarke" explores the mapping of the midwest and northwest and the quest for a passage to the Pacific Ocean, while also documenting the rising curiosity and aspirations of a nation. "Prohibition" looks at the outlawing of alcohol in the 1920s and 30s and the effects it had creating a criminal underground and assesses the western fascination with drink. Ken has a reflective and meditative style which poses many questions as it informs. His team also skillfully incorporates the music, cultural references, and quotes from the historical times he portrays. Other winning efforts include "Thomas Jefferson", "Mark Twain", and "The Dust Bowl". Much to explore and appreciate!
